Post-Kill Your Console GPU

Hello everyone, I was always interested in leaving crappy console experiences in the past and jumping onto the PC bandwagon. After i finally decided to build my own Kill your console style system, I find myself craving more and more from my rig. So i would like to know all of your opinions on a good mid to high range GPU, mainly the HD 7970, R9 280x, GTX 770/760 ect. I would be doing mostly 1080p gaming (1440p in the future) and start to dabble in the art of video editing.

Thanks again,

I have had my Asus 7870 DCUII for a few months now and I absolutely love it. I get excellent performance in all games that I play with the exception of cry engine 3 which can be choppy. I am going to be completely honest though. If I could do it again I would have spent the extra $100(at that time) to get a 7970, because there are some games I wish I had the extra muscle like R2 Total War and ArmA. Having looked at some new benchmarks, I would go with the Asus 280x. It is neck and neck on price with the 7970, but it is stock clocked a bit higher. DCUII is also extremely cool and quiet. I have no issues with noise from it even with load. Plus when you move to 1440, you would definitely want some serious muscle.
