Plex on Linux on Windows VM with GPU Passthrough? Ryzen + AMD GPU

Hi,

I built a nice machine with AMD Ryzen 3600 + RTX5700 and 64Gb RAM.

I’ve explored a bit and I am able to pass through my GPU to a KVM virtual machine.

Since Plex seems to not play nice with AMD GPUs on Linux (it will just ignore them), I was planning to throw it into a Windows 10 VM.

That was the plan but…

I started wondering if it would be a better solution just letting Plex encode and transcode directly with the CPU on my Linux host, without worrying about the GPU.

This way I could accomplish all my home server needs with docker and avoid the hassle of a hypervisor plus the chore of maintaining a W10 machine at home - updates, reboots, and all the stuff we know…

My Plex needs are pretty basic, I seldom stream outside the house, and at most we are 4 people watching different stuff from Plex at the same time…

The AMD GPU would also be available for Darktable and Steam in Linux…

Can someone share how Plex performs under Linux on a scenario like mine?

It can’t be that bad if lesser-powered NAS devices we see can boast the plex logo on it, can it?
