As the title suggests i’m in the Process of upgrading my PC. I’m currently waiting for the Nvidia 11/20 Series GPUs to either get a cheaper price on the 10 Series.
TL;DR:
Is the 1080 the “better” choice for great 1440p 144Hz gaming (plus some future proofing) or will a 1070 suffice (comfortably)?
can my i5 6500 handle a 1080 pushing 150 Frames at 1440p or is an upgrade due there too?
If a CPU is needed, Ryzen 5 2600, i5 8400 or i5 8600? If the difference in Gaming is close to zero, I’ll go with Ryzen for the additional cores.
A few months back i treated myself to a nice Monitor. Asus, 27" 1440p 165Hz GSync, all the good stuff. It’s impressively great coming from a 10 year old 24" 1080p screen.
Gaming on it with my 1050ti isn’t so much. It’s “workable” but far from a great experience. I’m not the guy for AAA Titles, more Overwatch and “older” Games like Borderlands. So i was able to make it work. Crank down all settings and it works. But I want to upgrade to improve the experience now and have a bit of performance to work with for what ever games come up in a year or two.
So far so easy. I’ll keep lots of stuff from my current PC. 16G DDR4 are fine, PSU and HDDs/SSDs are all staying. No Problems there. Questionable is the CPU and which exakt GPU to upgarde to.
My first gut feeling was going with a 1080 to be safe and keeping the rest. I’m no sure if my i5 6500 can handle the 1080 pushing 150 Frames at 1440p plus some browsing and watching twitch at the same time. I currently feel it limiting when pushing above 150 FPS. I have no clue if higher details and higher Render scale will make this better or worse…
Basically anything between a 1070 and a 1080 seems reasonable. And i’m not sure if it’s worth saving the 80€ now on the 1070 or going for “future proofing” with the 1080.
Finally, if upgrading to a new CPU is needed, i’m lost between AMD and Intel. For everything besides Gaming i’d go AMD for the 12 Threads. Audio production loves cores! In Gaming Performance the Intels seem to do better though. So, Ryzen 5 2600 or i5 8400/8600k? No clue.
Any help to get my head sorted on what i need/want would be highly appreciated! If you need any more info, please let me now.
The short answer to your question is 1070 does just fine, and your i5 will get the job done.
Of course it kinda depends on the game and whatnot but I have a 1070 and used it on a 6600k without issue. I got VR and there was one game I wanted to play that needed more CPU so I went for the 7700k. Theres no reason you cant try with your current CPU and upgrade down the road if you do run into stumbling blocks. My guess is you will be plenty happy with a 1070 or 1070ti.
You might as well do the GPU and then if its not up to your standard (pretty sure it will be fine) upgrade the rest. It should be good enough for the time being with your use case imo.
Thanks for the Input.
It’s a bit tough getting benchmarks for some games.
I basically want to hit 165 FPS at 1440p High Details on Overwatch now. This makes sure i can have a perfect experience now plus have some room for more demanding games later. From my Research a 1070 would work but be close to at it’s limit.
I would o with the 1080, and then see if you still need a cpu upgrade. You might as well grab a 1080 so that you won’t be wanting to upgrade again as soon.
From my experience with my 144hz 1440p setup I would tend to agree for that game. Again, its going to vary. Theres only a few titles that I cant run at max settings and not get my 144hz, and for those I dont really care that I’m not getting 144 because its still way above 60 and its hard to tell the difference. If you want more power the 1070ti is a very good way to go since its basically a 1080 just a few less cuda.
@mutation666 is right though. I wouldnt get one right now unless you absolutely have to have it.
That was the plan anyways. I’m saving up a bit and see what the New Nvidia stuff brings. Either it’ll be leagues better or the 10 Series will be cheaper.
I wouldnt bet on that. at least not initially. they might be priced identically given that basically all cards are above msrp right now. On launch the 11 series might even be a bit cheaper, at least for a bit.
