Pick the parts for this laptop

Can someone go through this website and pick the relevant parts for a laptop that will be sufficient for programming, watching hd videos and dota 2.  Don't exceed £700 before VAT! I don't require OS or antivirus.

You know you can't really build a laptop right?

you cooouuld, but it would be quite expensive, tedious, and not worth it other than saying "hey look i made a laptop"

i'm assuming...? he's asking for laptop recommendations and/or for recommended configurations via a site that does semi custom laptops

Exactly what overlord said, this website lets you choose what you want and build it for you. I'm just not entirely sure what to get in case I go overkill with the system.

there isn't any website so it is quite hard to do anything

Sorry forgot to give link, http://3xs.scan.co.uk/configurator/custom-gaming-laptop-15in-intel-core-i5-and-nvidia-geforce-gtx-765m/default

Brilliant company

Can some of you guys pick the sufficient parts for my requirements?

The base model that it selects when you click on the link is fine, probably overkill for you.

If you're gaming you should honestly look at getting a machine with a better GPU.

At least a 770m or preferably a 780m. If you can hold off for a bit more a the 860m and 870m are looking good.

Other that that my best advice would be to strongly consider getting a Laptop that uses MXM GPUs so you are able to upgrade it down the road. Otherwise having a GPU soldered to the motherboard is going to ruin and chance of an upgrade down the road.

who games on a laptop? a 780m performs like a desktop 660ti... it'd take 780m in sli to rival a stock desktop 780... and that's about $1,600 worth of GPU... and it'd run HOT

My friend's Lenovo Y510p with it's single GT750M performs pretty damn well.

No, you won't be able to max out Crysis 3, but you should be able to get pretty good looking settings with just a 765m.

One of the guys from the anandtech staff wrote an article about using laptops for gaming: http://www.anandtech.com/show/7834/nvidia-geforce-800m-lineup-battery-boost

His opinion is that with the new NVIDIA series 800 cards gaming laptops are reasonable.

I already have a gaming pc, this is for uni and remember it's only really for dota 2 and not graphically intensive games like crysis.  Would the quad core i7 not be worth the extra money?

maybe just personal preference, but I'd get a laptop with an entry level GPU for whatever I needed for school or work, and dump the money it'd cost to get one worth a flip in gaming and build a VERY nice desktop gaming rig...

I mean for the price of a nice gaming laptop (that'll run anything on high-ultra 1080p)... we're talking a home system with socket 2011 and a 780ti... that way you have something to play with, and you have something at home to do all your intensive tasks and PLAY with ;)

but maybe that's just me... I mean hell, if money isn't an issue, go for it.... I will say haven't seen what the 800m series can do though

I know you can get bare bones laptops and build them from there.

Yea guys i think the gtx765m should be more than enough for dota 2 and other source engine games possibly.  I use my PC at home for the more intensive games.  Its casual gaming that i'll be doing at uni at the end of the day.  But on the subject of really high end gaming laptops, its just not worth it.  Gonna go with some tech noobs specs, but still contemplating getting the i7 and dropping the win 8.1 lol.  Thanks for the inputs.

Ps It would be interested to hear your opinions on this website giving you the option to customize a laptop like that, i know most of you guys are from the US and not entirely sure if any of you have come across a company that provides this, maybe you have...

yea cyberpowerpc offers the same sort of thing... I just can't bring myself to spend what a "nice" laptop costs... just be sure you're getting the right i5 if you're getting an i5... there's 4 core and dual core models... all the i7's are quad

A 765m would work fine for casual gaming. My g72 with a 260m could play source games maxed out in 1600x900 at 90-110 fps.

Great benchmarks for mobile GPU's can always be found here http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-765M.92907.0.html

Don't exceed £700 before VAT!

The only way to not exceed £700 is to pick the cheapest item in every section without any software whatsoever. If you don't want to exceed £700, then there's no reason to even ask for advice, because there's only one possible config.
Either way, I'd pay the extra for I7 and everything else seems fine on lowest, especially if you already have a gaming PC.

P.S is there a reason why you want it to be custom? You can probably get a good MSI or Asus laptop with same specs for same or lower price.
