I still haven’t heard any reasoning for why this is bad, and a few good examples for how it is good.
For me personally, I’m more concerned about unpached IME and potential Meltdown/Spectre vulnerabilities in my aging Core2Duo system I’m running PfSense on at the moment to be concerned by this.
That and the coming requirement for PfSense that I run a CPU that has AES NI has got me coming to the conclusion that running a firewall off of aging hardware is no longer a viable option for me…
I’m not sure there are any reasons it’s bad. The way I read the original post was that nx2l was getting hit with a pop up after logging into the new version of pfSense. That may be the first time that they realized that there was a for-profit company behind pfSesne and wasn’t sure if it had always been the case or if that was something more recent.
My comment about it being irritating was directed at the pop up itself. But I was very much not clear on that.
Oh that’s nice! That’s better than when they added the pfSense Gold menu that actually broke the UI in serious ways. Instead of fixing the problem right away, they left it in place for months, possibly over a year, and got bitter at anyone who asked about it on the forums.
