Pfsense Crashing randomly after 2 days

Hello everybody,

So i have 2 of these boxes (1 home and 1 at the office) :- Intel 11th GEN N5105 Mini PC with 4x 2.5G Intel i226LAN

Both running identical pfsesnse ce 2.7.2 under proxmox ve 8.14 configured with 16GB of RAM. I have a WireGuard connection between the 2 sites using pfsesne WireGuard package. Additionally, I am also running pfblockerng-devel from pfsense’s package manager on both sites. I have configured NIC hardware passthrough on both proxmox boxes (home and office) for pfsense WAN and LAN on both sites.

Both pfsense install have 2 cores and 8GB of RAM dedicated to them. So the configs are identical

One of my boxes keeps crashing randomly after 2-3 days, while the other box is rock stable for a month.
The box that crashes gives me the following crash dump.

I think i’ve eliminated hardware as the cause of the issue, as proxmox on the same box shows an uptime of 26 days where as pfsense (the only VM on proxmox) crashes after 2-3 days.
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Do you have ballooning memory enabled in the VMs? If you’re using hardware passthrough then enabling ballooning memory will cause instability.

Under the memory tab of Proxmox Pfsesnse VM I have Ballooning Device tick marked in both proxmox boxes. Pfsense crashes on one box and doesn’t on the other.

Just ran a memtest+ on the crashing pfsense and it passed successfully.

Also pfsense on both my boxes rarely uses more than 8% of 8192 MB

If you’re using hardware passthrough you can’t use ballooning memory, the VM needs a block of memory dedicated to it otherwise DMA can read or write to the wrong memory address.

Thank you so much for that valuable bit of information. I went ahead and disabled ballooning on both proxmox boxes.

As for the crashing pfsense I first ran a memtest to ensure the hardware is running fine. I wanted to run mprime on the box, but time was a constraint. I also did a fresh install of pfsense with all my WireGuard tunnel configs , pfblocker. Hopefully it won’t crash again.
