Pcie 3.0 x4 SSD speeds in a pcie 4.0 x2 slot?

Hi everyone, I have a question that I’m hoping to get some clarification on. I’m going to build myself a new PC in the next month or so. Ryzen 9 3900x Asus x570 ws ace motherboard, Radeon 5700xt and a pcie gen 4 SSD.

My question is… Will my Samsung 970 Evo doll work at it’s rated speed in a pcie gen 4 x 2 slot since the bandwidth of pcie gen 4 is twice that of gen 3?

Has anyone tried this?

the PCIe gen 4 slot would downgrade to PCIe gen 3 so it would run at PCIe gen 3 x2
