My mom and sisters, oddly enough, play minecraft avidly and they want their own computer to play it on because right now all we have in the house are two crappy laptops and my computer which is a total beast. So I want some ideas for a system that is overclockable, can run MC at nice high framerates, and is around $1000 or less. I was thinking centering it around and AMD apu, but my mom, who knows a lot less about computers than she thinks she does, insists that it be an i5 2500K based system. I'd appreciate any ideas.

$1000 for a minecraft pc is massive overkill. This build is under $800, gives you great oc'ing headroom, plenty of ram, storage, an AMD 7770 (will kill minecraft), and a 550w gold certified psu. and, as alwats, the case is subjective.
i3 (maybe lower/higher), gtx650/R7770, and 4GB is all you need to play MC on fancy smoothly. Preferably, an APU with some beefed up memory, it will be cheaper and you may only need 1/2 of that 1k.
I would have gone with a Phenom II build and a 6870...
6870 is more powerful vs the 7770, and most can be found for a good price if you are willing to dig around.
That's weird haha.

Overclockable, good for minecraft or whatever.
The PSU I just picked because Idk I felt like it fit the build well.
