Be sure to screw in standoffs before putting motherboard in the case. Don't jam anything in someplace it doesn't fit. Refer to motherboard's manual when in doubt. Pretty hard to do permanent damage if you follow those guidelines.
Also, be sure to ground yourself; use an anti-static wristband if you have to. Don't build on carpet/rug. Don't want to short out any component due to static shock.
