PC build advice for Unreal Engine animation and gaming

Hi All…this is my first time building a PC. I currently have an HP OMEN 2060 GPU gaming PC. The problem is, that the GPU is not strong enough for me to handle the 3d rendering (Unreal Engine 5)

I also include some of the answers to make it clear…

  • Budget. How much are you willing to spend?
    2000 CAD

  • Where do you live (what country, don’t post specific details), and what currency do you use?
    CANADA, Canadian Dollar

  • Is there a retailer you prefer?
I will buy everything at Canada Computers…(more easier for me)

  • What will you be using your Glorious computer for? Gaming? Rendering?
Play games…CSGo, Cyberpunk, red dead redemption 2

  • Do you overclock or want to get into overclocking?
    No…I don’t need overclocking

If you Render or Edit things-

  • What application do you use to render? (very important)
Unreal Engine 5 Animation, and Adobe After Effect, will learn Blender in the future

This is my currently build:

Ok, I see quite a few subpar options here…

First off, you are massively overspending on the CPU cooler, especially considering the CPU. A 360 radiator to cool a 7600X is like buying a refrigerator room to keep your 2 liters of Ice Cream cool.

The 7600X is about as low as you can get in power draw and really is not a good gaming or content creation CPU. Sure you can, but you can technically game on a potato, too. While it works and can be done I think the budget is big enough here to not having to make that compromise. A 7900 is the bang for buck here and comes with a decent cooler.

The 4060 is also really dumb compared to the 7600 XT, especially for content. Unless you have to use RTX due to certain shaders and stuff… GeForce isn’t really worth the Nvidia tax at the moment.

1TB of SSD space is really cramped these days, 2 TB leaves enough breathing room for not having to care much. You also did not include a PSU in your example build.

Here are my picks, I will go over budget a little, but hopefully it will cover the worst holes. Not a big fan of your case, but if you want that then yeah. The 7900 comes with a sufficient cooler, which makes it the best bang-for-buck right now.

I did choose a different screen as well, which is $50 cheaper while achieving roughly the same things.

Unfortunately the build is above budget if we are going with the CA Comp requirement, but I feel going slightly above like this is better than skimping on… Practically anything on that list. I would probably skimp first on the storage, then on the GPU if you still need to do a trim, then lose the WiFi requirement on the motherboard (but Native Bluetooth is such a game changer…).

Feel free to take as much or little of my suggestions above as you want to.

I really like this one LOL and Thanks for the suggestions…

I think your build is way better than mine for sure…

I have one question about the CPU. I saw the build you suggested to chose 7900…I mean since 7900 and 7800x3d only 120 CAD more…is it a good idea to choose 7800x3d?

Not really, more cores is better than more RAM cache for your use case. The X3D is mainly for e sporters that need the extra competitive edge, or if you are into mainly CPU heavy titles like Cities Skylines, MS flight sim or Civ 7.

You do give up on the extra cores that will allow you to seamlessly transition between in game and out of game Unreal development though.

If your current Omen is the 25L/10700F model, it may be worth looking into a RAM upgrade and a GPU + PSU as opposed to an entirely new system. We haven’t yet invented a full doubling of performance over 10th gen, and DDR4 is cheap. Plus they appear to have hamstrung it with single channel memory.

The model was made 3 years ago, so I am not sure if I can upgrade some of the parts…The only thing I know are the GPU is 2060 and the CPU is AMD 3600???

AM4, yes, that is upgradable - Though it does not make sense to go for the higher end AM4 models. I would get a 5700X(3D?) and 32 GB of RAM. The 5700X is a 65W TDP which means your current cooling system should be able to support everything about it, just a quick slot-in.

The RTX 2060, well… I would not invest in anything lower than an RX 7800 XT as an upgrade.

Higher tiers of AM4 just isn’t worth it anymore, save your money to get on AM5 now instead in that case.

That doesn’t move the needle much; I’d still throw a GPU into that over going for a full platform upgrade unless you absolutely must light money on fire.

A 5700X3D at like $230 would still make sense so long as the motherboard BIOS would allow it to function, but my level of trust in HP is approximately zero and has been since 2007.
