P520 lenovo workstation optane p905 truenas not detected

as the title suggests, I’m a new truenas user who bought an optane u.2 drive with included m.2 for my lenovo p520. Am I going to have to return this? it doesn’t seem to work or show up.

First off, I am not familiar with Lenovo p520. However, a quick look seems to indicate that you should be able connecting a u.2 SSD.

First question: is the device recognized during boot? e.g. in the BIOS/UEFI next to the Samsung drive?

I assume you used the included m.2 to u.2 cable and connected it to a (previously empty) m.2 slot on your motherboard.
Possible issues include (I am just thinking out loud):

  • PCIe lanes are shared with another resource that is currently in use or need enabling in the BIOS/UEFI.
  • The connector was not placed in a “type M” m.2 slot. There are other slot types available.

Another way to connect a u.2 drive is via a adapter card in a PCIe slot. I saw that your motherboard apparently has a couple that could work for this. This adapter is an example.
