Overclocking Help i7 950

Hey Gang

I think I might be having a few issues with a system I decided to overclock after having run at stock setting for 3 year (LOL).

The Temps on the CPU are kind of worrying me as the idle temps are 48-50 and when I run prime95 the CPU temps BOLTS up to 90+ in less than 2 mins and I stop the test at that point. (I'm scared I'll Kill the CPU :P)

I wanted to get some feedback on if these setting are good or can I improve the temps by making a few adjustments.

Here are my specs and OC settings, I hope I've included all the neccessary info:

phew.. a revision 2 board.

Those initial temps are a little concerning - the U12P although a decent unit will certainly be tested on a x58 overclock. Try to get some higher airflow in the case to help. Plus reapply some thermal paste - 4 to 5 mm at max diameter. & Really seat the cooler in good and tight (not so tight that you break shit though lolz).

If you could post back the stock speed temps (ambient temp, idle and load), I can help a little more.

--ok here we go--

Put everything to 'default' instead of 'auto'

Apply your ram settings manually. ~ timings ~ as I can see you already have done :-), voltage

200 base clock is a little ambitious to start with so. Start off with say 180 with 18multi, stress test. Then 19 multi, stress, maybe add a little vcore & qpi/vtt, then 20 so on. If you reach a point of instability drop the clock speed down a little then continue & add a touch of vcore & qpi/vtt. Go until load temps are fine, your happy and everything is stable. Even going up/down in 2mhz increments can make all the difference in stability. So have fun experimenting. If 192 x 21 works instead of 182 x 22 then hip hip horaay, every cpu is different.

Chances are with all dimms populated you will hit a brick wall, all of my x58 boards did. In that to reach higher speeds - it was a case of dropping off half the dimms (still triple channel though).

Also remember ram is tied into the base clock - so if you adjust from 180 to 190 with a ram multi of 8 it goes from 1440 to 1520 etc. Yeah just keep a calculator on hand. Just try and keep it close to or below 1600. Pushing past will hamper a higher oc. Plus set your uncore ratio to double that of your ram multi ~ ram 8, uncore would be 16 etc.

I pushed one of my 950's to 4.5 on a UD3R rev2 (rev 1 boards were a headache). For one of the cheaper 1366 boards they are pretty darn good. Just watch the temps of the board itself, make sure there is really good airflow in the case.

I spent a a shitload of time with x58 oc'ing. It is so much more fun then sandy/ivy/haswell/am3 etc. You certainly learn a lot from the experience thats for sure.

Hope some of what garbled mess I typed makes sense. Peace.
