Opnsense Recommendations

I’ll be moving to a new house that has 10gb symmetrical fiber and I’d like to get/build a new router. I’m trying to decide between an off the shelf high end router (likely a MikroTik) or DIY an Opnsense router that I can use for several years and put a SFP28 card into for future speed increases.

I currently run the 1U supermicro OEMed server with the 6 10gbe ports with PFSense running on it. The CPU is a bit old at this point so I’d like something more modern and power efficient.

A thumbs up from me on Mikrotik in general, but do be careful with your choices depending on your use case. Some have switch chips, some don’t and the CPU types (MIPS, ARM) can make a big difference.

I currently use the Supermicro SYS-300A as my main router, but I only have 1.2Gb on the Internet side.
