Addendum
git version 2.11.0
Not wanting to be a neco, but I think there should be an addendum to this post.
The post-receive.sample hook is no longer a part of the other samples with git version 2.11.0. Wendel specifically reference this sample hook in the video, even though the specific sample was removed in late 2015 and this video came out in 2016; so I guess he was using an older version of git.
The current hooks directory looks like this now:

post-update.sample
pre-commit.sample
pre-push.sample
pre-receive.sample
commit-msg.sample
pre-applypatch.sample
