TLDR; Three OLED monitors, three vertical line failures at ~4 months — is this just me or a pattern?
I want to hear from others before I write off OLED gaming monitors entirely.
Timeline:
Nov 2023: Alienware AW3423DWF (QD-OLED). ~4 months in, vertical lines appeared at regular intervals, with washed-out color in those columns. Dell RMA’d it.
Replacement unit: Same exact issue, same timeframe (~4 months). Replaced again — this time I sold the new unit still sealed and went back to IPS.
May 2026: Decided to try again with a 5th-gen panel — MSI MPG 341CQR. Different PC, same usage pattern (programming + gaming). ~4 months in: the exact same vertical line defect.
Three different panels, two different brands (Dell/Alienware and MSI), two different PCs, same failure mode, same rough timeframe. That’s not a coincidence I can chalk up to bad luck anymore.
For what it’s worth, I’ve since found Dell has a support article specifically about line defects/mura on Alienware QD-OLED monitors, and there’s at least one MSI forum thread describing the same symptom tied to the “Panel Protect” compensation cycle. So it seems to be a known issue — just one that never makes it into mainstream reviews, because reviewers test for a week or two, not four months.
Honestly, I’m pretty disillusioned at this point. I read tech sites daily and never saw this flagged as a common failure mode, yet I’ve now hit it three times in a row across two manufacturers. Makes me wonder how many people are quietly getting RMA replacements without ever posting about it.
Has anyone else run into vertical line defects on QD-OLED monitors around the 3-4 month mark? Curious if this is a specific panel-generation issue, a compensation-cycle bug, or something more structural to QD-OLED as a technology right now.
The fact that it’s two different types of panel with the same failure would lead me to believe that it’s either an issue with your setup, or you’re the statistical anomaly that proves the rule… is it literally in the same location on all three screens?
I actually meant the location of the line on the panels themselves. My line of thought being that if it was the same position on all three panels, that might indicate an environmental cause. I know that some types of panels can fail when their edges are compressed, perhaps by a camera being mounted on top of the screen for example. As for other causes, I’d only be pulling them out of my nature’s pocket.
Is it perhaps exposure to a crack of sunlight? If one vertical strip of the monitor is getting exposed to the sun but the rest isn’t, that could cause a big temperature differential.
I’ve had an OLED monitor, ASUS XG27AQDMG, since Nov. 2024. The monitor is WOLED instead of QD-OLED. It’s overall worked really for me. Only had a odd “smearing” issue, but that was due to user error on my part with wiping it while the monitors was in it’s cleaning mode. Another cleaning mode cleared it up.
Due to the amount of OLED monitors out there I’m of the opinion you’ve been very unlucky. Have you tried an RMA/ Warranty on any of them?
My honest opinion:
Using a OLED for programming and gaming is like using a Suzuki Jimny for foresting and on the race track on the weekend. Sure it works, but it is not great on the track. And the poor Jimny is probably suffering a lot from the racetrack weekends and will break sooner.
I am oldschool. My gaming pc is only for gaming. OLED lifetime and power consumption does not matter there. It only runs a few hours a week. Work is done on a differnt PC, with way, way lower power consumption, way bigger screens that don’t care about static images, and a OS that does not suck balls.

That if I buy an OLED monitor, I should be playing only, and that for just few hours per week?
Last time I checked the specs, they never mentioned anything like that. Instead, they say “3 years warranty for the panel, including ghosting”
Also, my “static images” from work, are not the problem here. OLED process to remove any ghosting happens “every X hours”, not “every X hours displaying static images”.
If you bothered to read the info I mentioned, from Dell and MSI, they both agree that “Panel Protect” compensation cycle is the cause, which as I said happens every X hours, not because it displays static images.
If 10-15 hours per day could cause issues, they should mention that in their specs. I have used many “gaming monitors” in the past, actually my 2nd monitor is one, and I never had issues working on them for hours. Making them specific for gaming, usually requires higher specs than just office use, therefore not actually compromising anything.
This is 5th generation panel, and I can still see problems that shouldn’t be there, or if they are, the technology isn’t what it supposed to be.
Interesting. I’ve never owned a large OLED display, but a quick search of “oled vertical banding” and there are no shortage of results. I will certainty be checking for this when I buy an OLED.
Well, I intend to have my hardware longer than 3y. None degraded colors would be also nice.
OLED is by design less suited to handle static images, not matter what firmware trickery you use. Also I it uses (again by design) more energy, which I think is a waste just to display me my a terminal.
So whatever the reasons for you annoying RMA and QD-OLED issues are, for me this is just further proofe, that while this technology is great for gaming, it is not for everday extended use.
So to anwer you inital question, I don’t think they are a disappointment. I just think the have a very specific use case.
Cool concept, but in my opinion is too early and too restrictive.
And as John says in the video, you can see the difference (can you…?) mostly in platform games, not even a fast paced FPS like CS:GO.
I’m trying to decide between a Samsung 49” OLED or the IPS for work. Do OLEDs still burn in, in 2026. I’d love it have an oled but my main use case is for work.
Definitely get the IPS for work.
OLEDs still get burn-in marks, although it is improved.
For me, work & gaming, I get to have the screen refresh almost every other day, and it is not convenient at all to have a meeting and suddenly your screen goes black.
OLEDs are about colours, brightness and refresh rates, something that is not useful while working.
I bought an LG ultragear 49 inch oled in early 2023. There is a small amount of banding, but only if I put in a specific gray slide. Not really noticeable in day to day use. Monitor says 8.6k hours of power on time.
Although I would definitely downsize next monitor, it’s been great and reliable so far. Maybe not VRR, VRR makes the screen flicker.
