Oculink Backplane vs SFF-8639 Direct Connect

I’m connecting some U.3 SSDs to a Highpoint Rocket 1580. Is there any benefit to one way of connecting over the other?

I’m planning to mount the U.2’s inside the case and don’t have an external 5.25" drive bay, so the point may be moot, unless I ran the Oculink cables outside the case to something like an Icy Dock U.2 cage.

Thanks.

Technically you’re better off connecting the disks directly with no backplane inbetween, and you don’t really have other options, so… do that.

People like the ICY stuff for the density and ease of access.

Look up your drives’ spec sheet and check power consumption, you’ll probably need to consider cooling. They were made for a high-airflow server chassis.

Thanks for the info. That’s what I suspected. Good point on the cooling. I’ll be mounting them directly in front of a fan in the tower.

Thanks again!
