NSX-T overlay clarification

Hi Networking Wizards -

I’m struggling to grasp overlays conceptually with NSX-T. The part which is tripping me up is does the Overlay network have to be backed by a VLAN or can it be completely abstractly defined and handled within NSX?

Respectfully,

Cotton

I’m not sure I’m understanding the question correctly.

You do not need separate VLANs on your physical network for each overlay segment you define. That separation is handled by encapsulation at the tunnel endpoints.

If you’re asking whether you need separate segments for the overlay traffic and other types of traffic (storage and management), a design guide does suggest this. In this case they use VLAN tags to do that separation, but you could use separate physical interfaces instead.
