A man can dream…
Getting ready to try our spruce tip syrup on some sourdough pancakes made from wild yeast.
And we discovered that at least some of our cloud berries are already ripe.
Thanks mate, this video was my minds palate cleanser for today. Your little friends are the cutest!
Glad you enjoyed it and I will pass on your compliments to these critters! Junior did finally discover his perch we made for him after this video. Hopefully that will make him more comfortable hanging out when the squirrels come in. We have to keep the wall open for him so he can come and go but they come in anytime it’s open and he is not a fan of squirrels. But now that he knows he has a high perch maybe that will change.
Made a little name plate for HAL. Well, we didn’t make it, he made it and we just printed it. Looking forward to expanding his capabilities as the weather turns and we do more things inside. We should get our 57” Neo G9 soon and once I get the voice model working, it will be great to say “Hey HAL, design a _______” and have him show it on the ultra-wide as we talk through it and then finally say “okay, print it” and then listen for the printer to start humming.
I may have to start playing Dungeons and Dragons and watch Star Trek and begin collecting Magic cards once that happens.
You feed the little guy pastry? Can bird eat that? It’s lovely to see how comfortable junior is around you and also inside the cabin. Still a wild animal of course but you earned his trust.
He certainly can, these gray jays love human food. Noodles, rice, bread. Most corvids love bread I think. Whether it’s good for them or not, I don’t know, I’m sure opinions differ. Mostly now they’re getting nuts and black soldier fly larvae since we have an abundance of them in our compost bin and in our bin in the cabin. Junior loves the flies, the adults are scared of the flies, but all of them love the larvae.
BTW, the moose saga continues. I’ve got HAL not only detecting moose now, but also feeding the images into a vision model to get an idea of whether or not the moose seems interested in the grow bed or not. Seems to work well, so I’m going to code it so it takes the annoying speaker to new heights until any moose interested in the garden leaves. Jury is still out!

Got HAL now being a gentleman for the moose who aren’t eating our greens, but he’s checking and will go straight to a loud siren if they show interest. HAL isn’t all work and no play though. He also knows how to party.
Got my G9 Neo up to the homestead today. Looking forward to setting it up tomorrow.
57” Odyssey N9 Geo is very nice and I can tell it’s going to be great for productivity. And it could work for home theater despite it’s crap speaker output, except for it not having a remote. Switching its input from the computer to the other devices plugged in requires getting up and walking over to change the input with the buttons. So also if in PiP, switching between which window has the audio. And screen settings are global instead of by input. So if you have three devices connected through three separate HDMI ports, you can’t set screen width for each of them separately. So I’m hoping one of these solutions might work:
a) find a remote for this thing (pretty sure it doesn’t exist)
b) find a dock or some other device that will have various DP and HDMI inputs, PiP, a remote, and various audio outputs (optical and bluetooth) and abiliity to connect USB-B to the “KVM” on the back of the G9, which also has a DP output and that can take over which source(s) are displayed and send them to the G9 in ultrawide. Dock needs to have saved profiles (so i can switch displays, assign mouse and keyboard, assign audio so it’s a more seamless expereince). Basically taking over most of the functions of this monitor.
c) find a card I can install in my linux that will have an IR receiver for a remote control and will allow DP/HDMI inputs and then have linux display those devices in windows
Still, a great purchase but with its size I’d really like to be able to use it as a home theater.
The forum has problems with the anti-bot measures. At least that would be my guess why you are having trouble uploading the picture. Sometimes media does not load for me on here when my proxy is again being blocked because the anti-bot measures took action against someone in a similar IP range.
I was wondering why you television came without a remote but then I looked it up and saw that 57 inch beast is actually a computer screen
. I am more of a fan of the good old 16:9 or 16:10 aspect ratio but I am gonna be honest that two 4K screens, side by side, combined in one screen do look pretty awesome.
HAL proves he has a heart when it comes to mama and the kids. Instead of getting yelled at just for being a moose (which is discrimination!) and for the crime of simply existing and being detected, HAL is now reasoning in near real time and has an array of tools, but only for moose who are interested in our greens. So these moose didn’t get yelled at.
I interspersed the AI model’s reasoning in the video.
I’m in the market for a handheld 3d scanner but it seems like none of the off the shelf options work with linux?
Thinking maybe I’ll try using a Pi to see how well it does:
You: uhhhh uhhhhh uhhhh
Owl: What does he mean I look like cheesecake?
lol!
After we failed to get our 35 sockeye salmon this year, the wife’s family flew up from down south to show us how to fish. We got some halibut and cod and then hit the river to get some silver salmon. Won’t fill the freezer like those 35 reds would have, but we’ll take it. I kept all the heads and guts so I can share with our furry and feathered neighbors (sorry bears) and I’ve already given an owl a salmon carcass.
Most of it will go to our black soldier fly though to convert all those guts and heads into fertilizer for the garden. And I kept two whole pink salmon for our eagle friends when they show up.
Oh dang. Those are some good looking fish.
They are pretty. I hear they’re as good or better than sockeye and have more fat, so will be interesting to try them out. Was going to build a big smoker but since we were a day and a half early dip netting for sockeye (so we missed the run and got zero instead of the 35 we planned on getting), we’ll just buy a small smoker instead for these silvers.
Few years ago when the wife’s family came up, we went “flossing" for reds and we got a bunch of them. You just cast out into the river and let it drift and then yank and it snags the fish in the mouth. No bait. They’re just lined up along the bottom of the river with their mouths open and you just snag them in the mouth. We didn’t get 35 that year, I think we got 16 or so, but it lasted us a good while eating salmon regularly.
We’ll perfect our dip netting game next year and ensure we get our 35 reds. It’s such a valuable benefit to living here.
Collards vs bull moose saga continues. It’s the first day of moose hunting season and this young bull (not the same as the previous bull) decided to walk by the garden. He at first walks by the garden but he does so wihile looking at it. The LLM decided he wasn’t interested in the garden. Then he comes back and walks right up to the garden and the LLM fails to recognize he’s going right for it. HAL woke me up though so I was watching and I manually activated the siren and the bull ran out of there. I will need to tweak my prompt.
Fortunately Qwen3.8:27b-mtp-q8_0 was able to get it right on that image, so I’ll switch to that for moose queries:
Yes. The moose is standing with its head lowered and pointed toward the center of the yard, where the garden grow bed sits. Its posture—head down, facing the bed—suggests it is investigating or grazing in that direction, indicating interest in the grow bed area.
