No picture on my RTX 4090 Solved

Given that I love spending money on my PC I decided to upgrade to an RTX 4090 Suprim X. However, now I do not have any display output but the mainboard’s status message is the same as if everything was fine.

I already tried a different screen and different cables but I cannot figure out what’s wrong, especially given that the board does not complain about anything.

My specs are the following:
5900X
Asrock X570 Aorus Master

Is the power supply sufficient to drive the system?

I have a 1KW PSU while Seasonic Prime platinum rated, so I do think this should suffice.

What is a bit odd is that the fans are not spinning (even at startup) and I’m not sure if this is the card’s normal behaviour as it is not hot enough or a sign of an error.

I would also try to reseat it and prop up the GPU. I had a similar issue with my GeForce RTX 3080ti which was sagging to much because it is already enormous - a RTX 4090 is on another level.

Edit: Also make sure, the cables of the power adapter isn’t bended to tight, 600W is going through a small connector.

Ive seen Jay and Igor describing the same. In their cases it was the saveguard pins not detecting the correct number of connections. Thats why the fan does not even start. Maybe worth checking all connections twice and going more into detail. Did you use 4x cables from the psu to the gpu?

Due to the supposed enormous power consumption of the RTX 4090 I went ahead and also purchased a Seasonic Prime 1.6KW PSU (I made sure that the cables are compatible because I did not want to re-cable everything in my PC.) While I do intend to return this PSU because it is not actually needed, I quickly tested it as well and had the same result.

As a result, I have two 12VHPWR cables at my disposal, one smal dongle that connects with 4x8pin connectors and one larger cable that ends in 2x8pin connectors. I have tested both on either PSU but the fans won’t spin up regardless.

I assume I have answered your question. Otherwise, could you please elaborate?

I think Jay mentioned this in a recent video but do you have a link to Igor’s article?

in jayz video his AIB card wouldn’t start on his asrock motherboard while the FE would. Around 6:30 in the video.

This would be a catch 23 for me…how to install VBIOS when the GPU is not working in the first place? It’s a pity he does not plug it in in this video, so I could at least see if RGB lights up and things like that.

Hmm, just as a test, did you try slotting that GPU into the next x16 slot down and see if it shows a picture or not ?

I have the same mobo and my Radeon 6900XT would not show any picture in the first x16 slot but worked fine in the next one down.

Of course this also meant that it was running on PCIe, Gen4 x8 speed :frowning:

While this would be an option, I would have to dismantle my system more than I would like to, given that I’m vertically mounting my GPU. Furthermore, the 4090 is so enormous that it would not even fit in the bottom slot anymore

Currently, I’m updating the BIOS to the newest one and I will try the GPU one final time. Maybe it is just the newest BIOS that is required to get it up and running. If this does not work, I will more or less RMA it, the merchant offered my to check it in one of his systems and I would like to do that and see if it works on his end.

You may have a crappy riser cable? Try setting PCIe to Gen3.

If you meant Gigabyte Aorus (op mistyped? Asrock Aorus) all of mine have initial display output setting in BIOS and you can check if that is set to iGPU or slot other than first PCIe.

The riser cable was working fine on my Ampere card though. But I will try that as well.

Yeah, I mistyped it is a Gigabyte X570 Aurous Master and given that it is a Ryzen system I don’t even have an iGPU. It is set to PCIe1 though, at least on my old card when I’m able to check it.

Meanwhile, I have upgraded to the newest beta BIOS version but the issue persists…

Hmm…maybe this is a X570 related issue.

@wendell Do you know of any issues related to the msi 4090 suprim and X570 boards similar to the one Jay is having?

Jay has released a second video where he explains everything in more detail:

As you can see, in the video the fans of the Strix spin up and the RGB goes on, while my card does not react in any way, shape or form. Thus, I assume my card is truly broken. (The only thing that still strikes me as odd is that the board’s debug code is still AA, which basically says everything is fine…)

Edit:

I must say, the power draw of the 4090 is redonkulous. And I own an EVGA 3090 that can pull up to 500 watts!

Well, in hindisght it turns out that the power draw is not that bad after all. If you go a step further and limit it to 60% (which apparently equals 2/3 of its power consumption it only loses 5% performance in Cyberpunk 2077)

Ok, so I received a new GPU today (very same model) and everything works as expected. Thus, the other GPU truly was DOA.

Thanks for the update, glad it got sorted out
