New gpu?

hi everyone,

when do you think amd or nvidia will realease new gpu's? amd r9 290 looks great for the price but they need something new like maxwell to get a better card cuz the 290x is a 300watt card and 400watt card is kind of to much. i believe 20nm proces is delayed to 2015 but not sure. i don't know if nvidia will release maxwell on 28nm or they rebrand the gtx 700 to gtx 800 with powersaving software support like they did with notebooks. my dad has a pc running on intel hd graphics and intel graphics are oke but not perfect. i may give my gpu away and buy a r9 290 but if amd or nvidia release a new card i may wait.

also i saw some benchmarks with the r9 290 and it was so bad. a 7850 was somethimes better than a r9 290 and a 6850 was even faster. what's up with that? i probably use amd due to opencl and i'm on linux.

First of all this belongs in the gpu section.

Second: i dont know where you found that nonsense that a 7850 and 6850 are somethimes better... in what are they better then?

Third: a r9-290 beats a GTX780 in allmost every game.

Fourth: power usage on Nvidia cards and AMD cards from compaireble performance, is also not much of a diffrence, maybe a few watts.

Fifth: For open CL, a R9-290 will be the best bang for buck.

Grtz Angel ☺

ohw srry i thought it was in gpu section, srry!

a maxwell 780  will be better if amd still uses the same architectur like the r9 290. it's not that amd needs more wattage or whatever but more if amd has a new architecture. ifnot the r9 390??? will be 400 watts if they keep everything the same with more sp

linux gaming..........

here is the link http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=amd_january14_compare&num=3

Well i dont know how they test things , lol but those graphs look a bit strange to me..

If Linux gaming is worse on AMD.. i dont think so, but "if" then its a lack of Linux offcourse as usual ☺

Also the Title of that article, how do i have to intrepet that? Nvidia is still killing amd over Linux open CL? lolwhut..

I allways thought that Nivdia drivers on linux allways where a pain in the ass, but that as a side note..☺, Also upcomming mantle, will definitely help the gaming performance on linux for AMD cards.

780 would be my choice, at this current time. Depends on the prices where you're located. but the 780 does really well against the R9 cards at 1080p

they likely test them just like speakers. " Assuming you use them in the EXACT way we tested them, they perform the same way as when we tested them!"

Yes its still a hard decission, when taking the price in concideration, but, i also think that you don´t must overlook mantle, For gaming on Linux.

Offcourse we don´t know much about mantle yet. But it looks promissing

Well okay back to that graphs and artikle. A 7850 perform better in Linux gaming then a R9-290, is something my logical brain cannot match.. you talk about the same drivers..lol

At 1440p, the R9s close the gap, considerably. The P/P get's better at higher resolutions.

At 1080p, it wouldn't hurt to spend that extra $50 to get better performance. Overclocked results tend to give the 780 a decent margin.

Resolution is always a consideration.

but opencl :(

pretty sure mantle is windows only :(. i hope more games will be available cuz i hate switching to windows. the only reason why i boot windows is cubeworld and probably skyrim when i buy it. i normally don't buy games that aren't on linux which is sad.

i think there aren't drivers for the r9 290? atleast not mature ones?

This is really a Linux question more than it's a GPU question.

That Phoronix article was comparing proprietary AMD vs proprietary Nvidia drivers. It's also two months old, when Linux changes every day. Early on, the Hawaii GPUs were not well supported by Catalyst. Find a newer article, they do big gpu-multitests every week or so.

Really, if you're going to be using proprietary drivers, you probably want Nvidia, and if you want open source drivers, you definitely want AMD.

well the question is, will amd release new cards soon or this year and are there better drivers atm and will there be better drivers? i'm set on a amd card. if the r9 290 works good now i might buy it, if not i may keep my r9 270 and buy a gtx 750(ti) for my dad.

quick question about the r9 290. wil a xfx pro550 psu enough? it has 44A 528 watt on the 12v+ rail. i use 1 ssd and 2 hdd, oc i7 4770k 4.8ghz. in core temp it says it uses 85watt. motherboard h87 performance ASRock. i know i this needs to be in the psu section but i'm to lazy to make a new topic:)
