Hi all, I am about to build a new computer next week and I need help to decide wether its worth moving to x99, I was going to go for the 5820k instead of the 4790k, if i do this it means spending more on the ram and mobo ect, but the jump up from the 4790k isn't much for the extra cores ect. Heres my current build,
CPU: FX6100
MOBO: Sabertooth 990fx
GPU: R9 280x
PSU: Silverstone 660w
CASE: 750D
HDD: 1TB harddrive
I am planning on upgrading the cpu, mobo, and getting a new case so the hardware isn't dwarfed.
I know that the GPU will be bottlenecking the system but I will upgrade it later on down the line for now I want the new cpu in for work.
So my question is, for around £1000, should I go with x99 and go all out or should I save some money on z97? I was wanting the fractal design midi as a case so I would appreciate some feedback to what hardware I should put in it, all under £1000. I also plan on selling the old mobo, cpu and case to my friend for his first build.
It really depends on what you're planning to do with your computer. If you're a pretty large content creator, X99 is a great platform. Otherwise, Z97 can work just fine for the majority of people.
no point in a 9590, 8350 is capable of doing the same speed and the money saved can damn near buy a custom water loop. With 1000 You could upgrade to 8350, Upgrade to 290, and upgrade to a full loop for CPU AND GPU, AND get another case for better WC
That's a good point, it got me thinking but I plan on selling those parts to my friend for cheap to get him into pc gaming ect because he currently has an xbox one haha. Anyway I plan on going with the 4790K with the MSI z97m gaming MATX board and the fractal mini r2 and a corsair h100i or something. Then I was thinking on holding out on the 980 or maybe a 290x down the line. What do you think?
also i have considered a custom loop many of times but i'v never done it before and it seems daunting to pick the right parts out
The 980 seems like a pass honestly because I've seen some pretty unimpressive improvements (as little as 3%, but do remember maxwell was focusing on power improvements and is still on 28nm so a performance increase wasn't gonna be much) and if they don't price it right it looks like it may get annilated be the 390x if its final specs are similar to what the rumors say. But they wont be coming out until later so a 290x would be a good option if its similar in performance and you can find a good deal on one.
Thanks, the gpu upgrade will come later so I'll probably wait for benchmarks ect anyway but the 390x sounds interesting. My 280x will do for now though, I might even set up a mining rig with it if I have no use for it or I don't sell it.
