Never Trust Tech Support

We were wondering why an appliance was suffering poor performance after a drive replacement. Was a full stack of intel ssds. Replacements were from Micron.
Trouble shooting hdparm to controller caches showed full performance ~ 330MBs accross the board. Did a nwipe and discovered one of the replacements was taking 3 times longer to wipe. Swapped to a different bay and wiped again. Problem followed drive. Picture is the result. Not one fault mentioned by smart and disk life is less than 100 hours. Firmware is updated.

Just a friendly PSA that even though your manufacturer swears compatibility on thier mother’s unmentionables. Performance parity matters. Replacement drives need to be the same vendor and model. Just like a bad apple ruins the barrel. One derpy ssd spoils the pool. Now imagine trying to explain this to enterprise tech support workers who are neither technical nor supportive.

alright, I’m in and gonna reread

Micron > Intel as of recent

bathtub curve, drives fail in the first 90 days or in 3.5 years

EXACTLY how SSD’s fail
It’s fuckin indescribale and frustrating as shit.

Pretty sure I mentioned this a few hours ago…

yep, welcome to the fuck all of enterprise maintenance

You did not mention server age, but we replace every 3 years to maintain uptime.

you have shit tech support / MSP
Seriously consider local, but genuine pros. Ask obscure shit you can’t google quickly.

Now I can picture someone saying:

You create billable hours.

I use them.

We are not the same.
