Network / NAS advice

New number who dis?

After another long hiatus I once again rear my ugly head on the forums.

I’m looking for some advice. Recently i suffered some data loss via Microsoft StorageSpaces (Yes i had read it was terrible but wanted to try it) during a migration (I only had one copy of the date) needless to say, I’m rather annoyed at myself.

Prior to the data loss i was setting up a TrueNAS box since i was tired of the six 5tb external drives I was using. Why was i using these, well because I could use Backblaze to back them up. Well Long story short, because I’m lazy and didn’t decrypt the drives for over 30 days my backups where removed.

So where i am now. Some data has been recovered and put onto the TrueNAS setup, but i am very aware this is not a backup. So, my thinking was, a large external drive connected to my desktop, which runs nightly backups of my TrueNAS files, which in turn will be backed up to the cloud.

Does this sound like a solution of which won’t cost me an arm and a leg?

I appreciated any and all ideas.

Your solution could work as it would create another copy of your data. How much data are you needing to backup?

I am paranoid about backups due to having lost some data back in college! ~17 years ago. I keep my files on my TrueNAS Server. I have 2 full backups on separate external drives. I keep one with me and I leave another at my parent’s house, then rotate them a few times a year. I also keep my most important data backed up locally with a sync to the 3 systems I own. I also backup that data to BackBlaze. It’s only a couple of dollars a month as it’s only important things. I also have another full backup spread across 2 drives in my desktop. I currently have ~9TB on my NAS, ~500GB is backed up to BackBlaze.

Edit: Want to add that I am lazy about my backups at times, but I have created a system that works for me.

This will be the second time in my lifetime of nearly half over by average that I have lost a significant amount of data. Maybe 4 years ago, I lost one employees work for the prior 4 years. I’ve gotten much better at it at work, but alas not at home. Actual true irreplicable data will probably be less than 5tb. Right now i have 22tb of space on my TrueNAS. Realistically I won’t know exactly how much I’ve lost until I go looking for it. What i have learned, is moving tb or data via Gigabit is slowwwww. I may well invest in some faster networking.

You could sort-of replicate my build: AMD AM4 B550 board, 4600G CPU + onboard GPU, as much RAM as budget allows, an LSI9300=based HBA and 6x 16TB HDD. Your PSU doesn’t need to be that large, 450-550W suffices with power to spare (a 350W PSU will most likely do as well, but might be on the limits during heavy operations). I’m using plain Linux with a S/W RAID6, for TrueNAS I’d recommend RAIDZ2 (which is comparable to RAID6, but not quite the same). I had to backup 8TB :open_mouth: via Gbit, but as the target was a RAID, my network pretty much saturated.

Its not really in the budget at the moment to have a second TrueNAS setup. Hence the idea of just copying it to a HDD and using Backblaze to back it up online. Your suggestion is worthwhile investigating in the future tho.

You could sync your Truenas to One Drive/Google Drive etc think One drive costs me £10/month for unlimited data, I also use rsync to back up to a Synology once a day which is backed up to another Synology weekly which is in turn backed up to an external drive monthly  . Sounds excessive but Lessons learned a long time ago “Back up your Back ups” Sure there will be a solution on TrueNas to automatically back up to an external drive daily via rsync or replication.
