Need Realistic Help With Small Business Build Server - New to Larger Compilations

Hi | Hola | Konbanwa,

My name is Vince. I am having a bit of an existential crisis in the midst of a very real business/developer issue. Been a pythonista for for most my enterprise dev life. Web stuff too. Go when it helped.

I decided to kick off on my own and build a multi-platform secure offline personal medical intelligence platform. in Rust. Because Tauri passed all the requirements, looked cool, and small stuff I’d done was super fast. Here I find I’ve got effectively re-compile just about every every major dependency (it’s running duck db cuz i love it → props to those guys but why is my binary ballooning when i rebuild?…..anyway).

The real problem. I am burning enough money in infra and tokens building everything out. I went off github and to gitlab, and immediately started running into instance minute issues. ok. bought more. and more. and more. and more. and then there wasn’t even enough disk space. So i pulled out an old beelink 8c/16gb amd thing, made a runner. That thing is pinged to the hilt. And by design intent and os target reqs, I’m probably at ~20% test suite / os build verification volume.

These RAM prices. They make me sad. I think, even then, it’s needed. Test passes on small fixes are already climbing into the 10+minute for full linux rpm, deb, and android apk builds. I haven’t even gotten to ios, mac, win. oi.

Is anyone running a tuned build server? I can’t afford to buy more than one, really. And I can’t unleash all these fancy agents to help speed things up when I’m bottlenecked by buld.

Crying into the dark. Though it’s a nice day behind the blinds.

Best, Be well,

-Vincent

PS In short - any recommendations for a small business dev server that can run in-office under $5k that will scale from 2→5 empoloyees being agent friendly with a reasonable rust project? I’m not sure how Rust linker and packaging compares to others. I’m a newb to large compiled codebases.

This is what AI says:
Recommended Custom Server Specs (“Sweet Spot” Build Node)

Here is a cost-optimized, high-throughput spec for a dedicated Rust compilation server:

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 9950X (16 Cores / 32 Threads, ~5.7 GHz Boost). Offers top-tier single-threaded IPC and enough threads to saturate parallel crate builds.

  • RAM: 64GB to 128GB DDR5-6000 (ECC Unbuffered). Ensures each thread has ~3GB to 4GB of headroom during peak codegen passes without spilling into swap.

  • Storage (Primary): 2TB PCIe 4.0 / 5.0 NVMe SSD (e.g., Samsung 990 Pro or Micron 7450 Enterprise NVMe with high TBW write endurance).

  • Storage (Scratch/Build Volume): Allocate a 32GB tmpfs (RAM disk) or dedicated high-speed NVMe partition explicitly for the Cargo target/ directory during active CI runs to eliminate disk wait states.

  • Chassis / Cooling: 2U or 4U rackmount chassis with high-CFM air cooling (avoid liquid cooling in dedicated server environments).

I have an empty 4U I can build in, which is nice. But the 9950X? The server probably will double duty local caching and may have quite a few parallel jobs. Threadripper is dead? or waiting?

Threadripper instantly blows your budget out of the water with today’s hardware prices. The AI has a decent suggestion for a build. I am not sure what I would change given the budget constraints. Do you plan to host any local AI on this machine as well? That may change the calculus here.

No. I gave up building a local AI server for even our small on device models. I’m using Databricks and dumping weights out. Mmmm.

Thanks! At least AI is being sane.

This might be the prettiest linux box I ever build…with the lowest spec graphics card i’d ever imagine:

CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 9950X 4.3 GHz 16-Core Processor

CPU Cooler: Lian Li Hydroshift II LCD-C CL 72 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler

Motherboard: Gigabyte X870 AORUS ELITE WIFI7 ICE ATX AM5 Motherboard

Memory: 2 X Corsair Dominator Titanium 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR5-6000 CL30 Memory ($1240 - crazy)

Storage 1: Crucial P310 1 TB M.2-2280 PCIe 4.0 X4 NVME Solid State Drive

Storage 2: Crucial P310 1 TB M.2-2280 PCIe 4.0 X4 NVME Solid State Drive

Storage 3: Crucial P510 2 TB M.2-2280 PCIe 5.0 X4 NVME Solid State Drive

Case: Lian Li O11 Dynamic Mini V2 Flow ATX Mid Tower Case

Power Supply: Thermaltake Toughpower GF A3 Snow 1050 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply

VideoCard: Something for debug.

Why the liquid cooler? The nice thing about a metal heatsink is they are pretty durable and even if the fans die, unless you’re running extreme power density, your system will still work. Liquid coolers are basically consumable items.

ooh. i haven’t used the 9950x before. I checked the wattage and i guess it’s not pulling as much as I thought.

Thanks!
