Need advice on my new "AMD Ryzen Threadripper Pro 5975WX" Workstation Build

Hello folks,

It´s time for me to build a new Workstation.
As im completely done with Intel :rage: for very good reason, it´s time for the Threadripper Pro! :slight_smile:

Budget

~15.000$

Requirements/Usage

  • Running Linux as a primary operating system.
  • Using KVM/QEMU to run Windows and Linux VMs.
  • Running of about 8 to 10 VMs same time, 20% Windows and 80% Linux.
  • Especially there will be one Windows 10 Gaming/Working VM

Notes:

Regarding the “Windows 10 Gaming/Working VM”, it will make use of PCI(e) passthrough.

  • 1x GPU passthrought,
  • 1x Storage passthrough (As dedicated Windows drive)

Just to be clear, excuding the CPU and Storage, im willing to change any part of the following list.

I would be super happy, for any comments, suggestions and any sort of (constructive) criticism.

Note: If i listed more then one Model/Manufacturer in a component (inline), then it means my priority is from left to right.

Notes:

I´m willing to “drop” a “bid of efficiency” in favour to achieve a “extra shiny” look to my Build.*
Means for example that I prefer a RGB GPU/CPU Cooler over a non RGB.

Based on my “quick” research on pricing, in a consumer perspective, this build will cost me around 14.000 USD to 15.000 USD.

PS: Who makes the “best” dummy plugs? Any recommendation? I want to use “Looking Glass” for Windows 10 Gaming at high resolution/refresh rates.

Update:

After a million edits of this post, seems I will give a shot to this build now.
The expected price for the build is now about ~14.000 USD, yehaaa!, cheaper as exptected :sweat_smile:

You may need more than 1500w if you plan on using the 5975wx and 2 6950XTs at full tilt at the same time, each 6950XT can use like 400w and the 5975WX can use up to 500w if its not tuned right and you want to leave a bit of headroom because power supplies degrade over time

I don’t think that cooler has full IHS coverage so I would definitely not choose it
@wendell do you remember what cools better artic freezer 50 TR or a 4U SP3?

I woundn’t bother with a raid controller or HBA if you’re using linux, but don’t use onboard raid either, use software raid, I think wendell did a video on it but its much better to set up the raid in linux in software

I would personally go with the Asrock Creator as it has dual 10GB nic built in, no need for you to buy one and it supports PBO and undervolting through the curve optimizer, -28 curve should be stable and cut down on power consumption/heat and let it boost higher longer

thanks for your post.

The GPUs wont be at full load at the same time.
If I gonna play some games time by time then I will use “Looking Glass”.
This should not set both GPUs under full load, I guess at least…

To be clear, (just) one GPU is for the Host only!, and one GPU will be dedicated to Windows for gaming and some working.

Anyway, I understand your concerns. I should go for a “bigger” PSU as it does not make sense to have all this Hardware that “probably” can´t be “fully” used at the same time.

What PSU and how much watts you would recommend then?
Corsair AX1600i (1600W?)
2000w?

I´m a lazy guy, I really try to avoid extra cleaning.

I may have found a (should) working AIO: Silverstone IceGem 360 ARGB

I have really good feelings about the ASRock WRX80 Creator, the Asus might be more popular, but from what I´ve seens so far, the ASRock seems to be the better/more professional choice.

I know, I was reading a bunch of your posts regarding this, sounds amazing.

About the ASRock dual lan, I will “basically” just use it just for my lan/wan.
Anyway, I can´t use it for my iSCSI storage as it uses SFP+ cable connection.

Tell me, do you feel confortable/confident with the rest of the build?

Yes, it need to be SFP+, I also need RJ45 anyway for lan/wan around my network full of “chaos”. :slight_smile:

As I was running Windows and Linux as Host OS so far, so this was not a option.
But believe me, as i wont use Windows as Host OS anymore, I will definitively “try” ZFS on the new system. This is already on my “todo list”.

I´m working with ZFS on a daily basis on multiple of my other machines (mainly servers, most of the newer machines using ZFS/BTRFS), just never used it for my “(main) hybrid workstation”. As mentioned before, it wasnt really an option for several reason. But again, as switching to Linux only for the new build, I will give it a shot.

Final list, ordered everything today!

Basically, I decided to upgrade to 512GB RDIMM and to get completely rid of 3.5HDDs, which increased the price “a bid” :frowning:
