Hello,
I’m in the process of building a 2950X rig and have a few questions regarding memory choice. So far I’m inclined on using Gigabyte’s X399 AORUS EXTREME, though I’m waiting for Wendell’s review on it. I’m from Europe and I’m doing my shopping from amazon.de, amazon.co.uk and alzashop.com.
Workstation is mainly for Houdini stuff, so workload includes moving around big sets of data. I’ll be getting 64GB of non-ECC RAM for starters, but intend on selling that kit (hence I’m looking for 4x16 and not 8x8 kit as I think they have a better resale value) in the coming year (or two) and getting a 128GB kit, which will possibly be ECC. So my questions are:
-
What RAM frequencies are achievable with 4 DIMMs populated with non-ECC memory?
-
What RAM frequencies are achievable with all 8 DIMMs populated with non-ECC memory?
-
What RAM frequencies are achievable with all 8 DIMMs populated with ECC memory?
By Gigabyte’s X399 AORUS EXTREME QVL (https://www.aorus.com/product-detail.php?p=808) my choices for the 64GB kit are next:
3200MHz domain:
Corsair’s CMK64GX4M4B3200C16 with 16-18-18-36 timings. NOT B-die.
G.Skill’s F4-3200C16Q-64GVK with 16-18-18-38 timings. NOT B-die.
3000MHz domain:
Kingston’s HX430C15PB3K4/64 with 15-15-15-35 timings. NOT B-die.
Corsair’s CMK64GX4M4B3000C15 with 15-17-17-35 timings. NOT B-die and nowhere to be found for sale.
2933MHz domain:
GSkill’s F4-2933C14Q-64GFX with 14-14-14-34 timings. NOT B-die.
GSkill’s F4-2933C16Q-64GFX with 16-16-16-36 timings. NOT B-die.
Three HyperX kits that are nowhere to be found for sale.
I assume 2933MHz CL14 is the best choice here, but it also seems to be the most expensive one. I would greatly appreciate any advice over here, especially if you have experience with those kits.
Thanks, Bob
