Hello. I’m looking to build a NAS, and i’m looking for some inputs for the HW I have found.
These are the things I care about.
HW transcoding on Jellyfin.
Small size
2.5 gbit LAN
Atleast 4 HDDs.
Low wattage.
Okey performance.
This is the things I will use it for:
Backup Borg backup from VMs on other host, and laptops.
Jellyfin. I want to be able to transcode 4k to 1080p on the fly. Atleast 2 streams as one.
Probably run Truenas scale.
I’m thinking about running 4 16TB disks in RAIDZ1, with 2x optane m.2 disks for caching. Cheap sata ssd for boot drive.
| Component | model | NOK |
|-------------|----------------------------|-------|
| case | JONSBO N2 | 1000 |
| Motherboard | Topton N6005 | 2000 |
| PSU | Corsair SF750 Platinum | 2000 |
| Optane | optane ssd p1600x 58/118GB | 1400 |
| Memory | 64GB corsair 2933 2x32GB | 1750 |
| Disks | Seagate Exos 16TB x4 | 12120 |
| Everything | NAS | 20270 |
Is there anything I’m missing, or something you would change?

N6005 only supports 16Gb of RAM, the motherboard is likely not standard ITX.
Intel® Pentium® Silver N6005 Processor (4M Cache, up to 3.30 GHz) quick reference with specifications, features, and technologies.
I’m not sure about what you mean by performance but N6005 is quite slow
PSU is overkill, a sub 500W will do just fine
I would look into Toshiba’s MG08/MG09 series over the Exos
Optane’s are way overkill, Samsung 970 Evo will do just fine
You probably need to look into i3 CPUs or better to satisfy all your requirements

Thanks for the well informed reply. I found a used system on finn.no (local marketplace), and went for it instead…
Why would you go for Toshiba MG08 and 09 instead of Exos? And what about Toshiba MG10?
So, ~8k budget for a NAS? If you can increase that to ~10k, you can get something that is both upgradable and run circles around the N6005:
If you need a BIG uplift just get one of these babies and 2 Samsung 980:
And, of course, if you want performance over storage, do yourself a favor and go all out m.2 with an Asustor, base unit of 12 drives is around 10k NOK and SSDs are now roughly 4 TB for 2500 NOK e.g. 5x4TB drives for roughly 12k:
Asustor Flashstor 12 Pro FS6712X - 12 Bay Pure M.2 SSD NAS Network Storage Enclosure, Quad-Core 2.0GHz, 12 M.2 SSD Slots, 10GbE Port, 4GB RAM DDR4 (Diskless) : Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories

They’re usually cheaper and Toshiba tends to not screw with SMART data a lot less than Seagate.
MG10s are fine too depending on what size you need, MG08/09 usually have a better price/GB ratio though…
