So here is my quick review of my Rift. I got my Rift yesterday around 2pm, I had it all hooked up and ready to go around 3, It shouldn't take an hour but that is about how long it took me to get everything(sensor, cables, etc) laid out right for me.
I wear glasses, But I don't need to use them in the Rift at all and haven't tried. I can see fine without them in the Rift it seems. No Red Glow, no dead pixel lines :) I put my Rift on at 3pm, and more or less wore it until 10pm with no issues, including EvE: V. I guess I just am immune to Motion sickness?
Ok ok ok ok, fine YES God Rays are a thing. HOWEVER they are only on super dark scenes with lots of white. I can see them if I want to, but then kinda forget about them after a min.
Comfort, I took me about 10 mins to get it right, but now when I put my headset on it takes maybe 10 secs to get the sweetspot back and I am done. Just remember the HMD can swivel up and down that helps a lot. And having the back strap really far down on your head helped me a lot.
FOV: Taller than I expected, but not quite as wide, I only used a DK2 for about 3 mins back in 2014, but I swear the DK2 had a SLIGHTLY larger FOV. But honestly I stop noticing after a minute once I put the Rift on. I think my glasses help this, ill explain. The Rift FOV is about as WIDE as my glasses FOV is in terms of the crisp image I see when I wear glasses day to day. Though the Rift FOV is taller then my glasses FOV….I hope that makes sense.
OK I guess Ill talk briefly about games.
EvE:V I used a controller then my x52, for EvE:V I prefer the controller, mainly as the controls with the x52 are so fake feeling compared to Elite Dangerous.
Elite Dangerous: Dear god is it amazing with the Rift. Lucky's Tale: I really thought this game was dumb looking, I hated it in fact how could this game be good in VR?…...Well I dunno but it is, Lucky's Tale is so fun, best game I have played so far.
Virtual Desktop: I haven't used this a ton yet, I loaded up WoW, GW2 and watched some video in it. That's about it. I definitely need to test it more, but I think it has the potential to be amazing.
Cronos: EDIT:5-25-16. I grabbed Cronos last night only had the chance to play it for about 40mins. And I swear I was only in that game for 5 mins. I think this game is going to suck the time right out of me.
Final thoughts. I am worried once I beat the few games I own for the Rift I will be bored to be honest. I don't know what Ill do once I finish EVE:V, Luck'ys Tale and Cronos(which I haven't bought yet). I have a VR Cover coming, and will be ordering a prescription VR Lens next month. I am sad I kinda like the TINY nose gap, makes looking at my phone if it buzzes easy. But I think the extra protection of the Cover is worth the loss of nose gap.
I think that's all I have to say.
TLDR: No issues(red tint, dead pixel lines), Games are fun, FOV is good, God rays are there but fine, and I am worried I will be bored with VR in a few months.
Even if the content is lacking now. I can safely say for me at least VR is amazing. I think it's here to stay, but VR needs a few more years to grow and develop into a more mainstream and mature platform.
The question on everybody's mind is: Do you recommend spending the money for a VR headset? No matter HTC vive or Ocolus, or even Sony VR when it comes out.
Gamer who has the cash: Yes Gamer who could get the cash easily: Yes Gamer who could get the cash with great difficulty: No Gamer without the cash: No RICH Average Joe: Sure why the fuck not Average Joe, NO
Give it until the 2nd or 3rd Gen headsets and I think that is when VR will be huge, and it a ton of homes, and not just the homes of gamers.
Well, that was pretty much exactly what i needed to know. My plan for Freesync monitor stay on place... May be i will do a review of it, when i get it...
Not officially, as Skyrim doesn't support VR. With a program called VorpX(which I have not bought yet) You can play TONS of DX9 and DX11 games in VR, some work better than others.
I was hoping to see a review of the Rift. what I want to know is how does it feel after 1 - 2 hours of use. other then that thanks for the review. Have a day
This would just be some cool info to have. Could you keep and log on times used and how long and see how you feel about it 1 month from now. I am interested in long term problems if there is no long term problems then my interest in the Rift would go up. Next would be games that come out for the Rift . I am just asking nicely to see if you are interested in doing some data logging putting real life usage instead of a review of its great used it for a few days, and thats all you see on the web. And you mentioned that you may get bored after you finish a game that would be great info as well to have. I am a person that goes with the motto It never hurts to ask. Have a day
I think the pixel density needs to double before I can really get into VR. I got a VIVE about a week ago and I was fairly disappointed with the resolution and pixel density. The screen door effect is very obvious to me. I've read that SDE is supposed to be reduced on the Rift because of their hybrid fresnel lenses but I picked the VIVE for the room scale experience, more open platform, and availability.
I'm used to playing on a 4k monitor so it was a dramatic reduction to me. I find that I prefer the higher resolution over the VR experience, at least for now. Although, I did almost fall out of my chair the first time I went around a curve in Project Cars so it's still enough to fool my brain into thinking that I was moving.
Yeah if you are used to a 4k screen I can see how the SDE would annoy the shit out of you. I cannot compare the Vive to Rifts SDE. But I also have read the Rifts is a lot better. I rarely even notice the pixels, and when I do I just don't care and then forget about them again within a few seconds.
Your not playing the right games, try flying in warthunder. Actually makes it significantly harder because enemies and dials etc etc are much harder to read if at all.
