Heeey, this could come in useful. My house network is fucked up currently in terms of organization and we are thinking about doing something like this. Added this to the W.I.P under your name
out of curosity, do you want, or atleast try link agrogation if you get enough 4 port cards? also what is the situation at your place with your network, is more wifi or ethernet? How many devices? Do you have any kind of NAS
Also, an open ended question to anyone that wanders into this topic... If I'm using a hard drive to cache websites through pfsense, would it make a difference to have an SSD? Or would the results be negligible?
Negligible, small files which would bennefit from an SSD are already cached in RAM. And if you only have a handful of devices on your network you're probably looking at a performance loss by using a cache. Your browser already has a cache, so you're just adding a delay to the system, if you're in an office with 20 people all looking at the same stuff then it can make a difference.
negligible, ethernet doesn't have the speed of sata, If I were you I would stay with the hard disk, unless you have a fiber line running into a switch and a 10 gig connection running to your PC, I would say no
well if it is like 20 people, I would get a SAS controller and get enterprise drives, but this is for home use, unless you want to do some insane shit, I think @Atomic_Charge would be interested, and that would be a cool forum post
I've actually used one of those old Dells as a pfSense box. I did it as a school project. Ran awesome. You'll just need an extra NIC. From my understanding Intel NICs work best. I don't use it any longer. Now I have a tiny router that I bought.
APU1D4 Red Combo Kit I have been running it for about a year now an it is just amazing. I would recommend it BUT if you want to use that old Dell that'll work too. Just need another NIC, a good clean up and you are good to go.
all the tri band 5.0 a presume? also getting multiple SSDs seems smart for you, but if you get a PFsense box, and your the admin, you can make everyone else have dsl like connections while you get to stream all the netflix
This project is mainly a means of getting my feet wet into pfsense. And it would only be used as a wifi access point. It's not really a matter of needing a router, as I already have a pretty good standalone one as it is. I just wanted to do something in my spare time, and picking up a new set of knowledge on a certain area of networking sounded interesting.
Yeah that and we have plenty of IoT devices at home on top of the 20 that are regular pc's, tablets and phones. I have already spoofed the network once by changing my IP and mac
cool, out of curosity since you want to get all the stuffs done, why not make a nas with your pfsense box, I don't know whether it has the capability, but it would be cool is some one did a blasing fast home set up
I am sad, can't you do that with other stuff, or make it all on VMs and passthrough network cards to PFsense and the drives that you won't use for catching on freenas or something like that
