For the longest time I had a Comcast DOCSIS 2 Motorola Surfboard modem. My internet was 10mbps up / 6mbps down. I though I should have been getting 15/5, so I didn't care to much. Earlier this year I asked Comcast what my internet speed should be. They told me that I should be getting 25/5!!! Later that month (about Feb. this year), I bought a DOCSIS 3 Motorola Surfboard SB6141. Unfortunately, my internet speed didn't change.
After a few annoying calls with Comcast, I finally got them to send me a technician on Tuesday at 5:00 PM. On Monday around 3:00 PM, I was at work in a meeting when I get a call from Comcast. I turns out the "technician" showed up a day early. I told the guy I scheduled it for Tuesday, I was in a meeting, I won't be available today, and that I would reschedule it later. The guy apologized and the ended the call. I proceeded to get 3 more calls from Comcast while in the meeting!
So today (Thursday March, 31) the technician showed up on time. It wasn't even a Comcast guy, just some contractor. The guy was actually nice, and listened to me when I talked. After an hour of dealing with my network he told me everything looks "perfect". He was confused as I was why my internet speed was slow. Eventually he grabbed one of the new Comcast modems/routers. BOOM 30/6 on my internet.
In my mind god was dead, hell is frozen over, and I should start betting on the Lions football team. I was going to haft to live with a Comcast modem/router. After the guy left, I immediately switched back to my Motorola Surfboard SB6141 and still got 30/6. I ran to the nearest UPS store and asked them to return Comcast's router. Now I'M FREEE, I'M FREEEEEEEEEE!!!!!
The only thing I noticed change was the IP addresses. Here are the changes
DOCSIS 2 ------- 98.X.X.X
SB6141 3 ------- 98.X.X.X (Same IP, Same Speed)
Comcast Crap ------- 60.X.X.X (New IP, New Speed)
SB6141 3 ------- 98.X.X.X (SAME IP, New Speed) ????????
Conclusion:
----Comcast has been throttling me till I got their new router.
or
----Comcast hasn't bothered to update my modem to the correct speed, even though I changed it before.
