Ok, finally got the green light from the misses to do a monitor upgrade for Christmas. Prices were down for sales before and slightly after the holidays.
I decided to go BIG by that I mean the Samsug Odessy CRG9. 49" of insane panoramic view and massive work space on a far better screen than my previous AGON 35" ultrawide.
So, ill start with the good. Quantum dot displays I belive are amazing screens. I have had a sumsung tv for ages and got two more laters years. Yes the build quality has dwindled some in the 2nd and 3rd tiers of their produxtion lines, but dam are the screens pretty. I know they arent OLED pretty especially for inky blacks, but for movies and such especially if you find one with local dimming is a amazing sight to see in HDR. I just wish this style of screen was avalible in more models not just 16:9 or the G9 32:9.
OK, so why the giant screen? Well its one of the few qdot displays that were out before OLED took over. Its super bright even with hdr content being a HDR1000 rated screen. Honestly it was almost tok bright at even 50% or my eyes never got used to it.
So, basically the screen is killer! Picture is smolth and nice with Freesync on my RX 6950XT. Sadly, because it is so large it really does put a huge strain on thr GPU. Yes I did get alot of games up to buttery smooth frames even with the huge pixle density of 5120 x 1440… for games that support it, or can be modded to this is amazing, but sometimes requires a quality shift, or resolution shift.
Other issues I had were common, as in the directions for ths firmware update are just wrong. The file name is incorrect, and you have to use a MBR formatted usb, all things that are NOT in the instructions.
One I didnt see was issues with monitor switches, and gamma settings, as well as having to unplug and plug back in the display for it to show correctly. The sleep mode takes a long time to wake, as well as some other glitches I never had with the other monitor.
Lastly, ITS HUGE, you think you want huge… well id measue first. Its 49" in Diagonal, but still close to a wopping 45" wide… you really use your neck to look at diffrent things on the screen. Honestly, it was a little much…and I dont say that often. So back it goes… but when it was on sale for $750…yeah was hard to pass up but after a week long testdrive she going back.
Now…I may have stepped up a bit further on the realm of crazy, but I really wanted better color so heading my way is the Samsung Odessy G8 qDOT-OLED. Heres to hoping the firmware, software and features live up to the Samsung name. Interedted to see these amazing blacks, and heres to hoping it isnt too dimm for my liking.
I still have an old samsung 3d tv I got back in 2012…used almost every day a hour at least and still no issues with it. This is part of the reason I am a fan of Samsung.
