Microsoft Looking to Switch Windows 10 to a complete Desktop as a Service model

What do you guys think? I like the end of the article recommending Linux as an alternative platform.

I think that article is labeled an opinion piece and rightfully so.

No one ever owned Windows, except Bill Gates. I highly doubt mass retailers and manufacturers are going to just start selling thin clients.

Windows as a Service is what 10 is based off of. Love it or hate it, it doesn’t do things much different.

“Forcing us off 7”? No one supports software for more than a decade. For some reason Microsoft is expected to. Completely absurd

Microsoft tries weird anticonsumer shit every couple of years. The market always rejected it. This is next year’s Windows S or RT.

IMO this article is fear mongering and a bit click baity. Although its true that this type of business model is what Microsoft is moving toward. I’m doubtful that this will be the only option. This type of thing wouldn’t really work for most Enterprise so they would need something to offer instead. I wouldn’t be surprised if they offered something like this as a “cheaper” option than buying the entire package outright but I don’t think they will make it the only option.

When you think about it, if their windows as a service offering is a good product, makes sense, and is priced right, like Office 365 is for many, what is there to complain about? I can’t imagine how they could convince someone like me to rent his operating system, but they’re welcome to give it a shot.

The whole piece is kind of pointless because its not a news piece, its opinion, so you can say anything you like.

Linux desktop as a service is here, its the end of the Linux desktop, say hello to thin clients. See. Its all crap of course.

His source for his claims? znet, their source? “contacts”, their source? Microsoft presumably. So his information is 3rd hand internet Chinese whisper knowledge likely at best.

Desktop as a service is nothing new, there’s open source versions, Amazon has something i think, Microsoft will do to as there will be areas of the market where it will make sense.

It makes sense for the entire market because its a cash cow. See office, adobe and AutoCAD.

Its been developing for the last couple years.

Windows 10 Enterprise has already began implementation of a subscription model.

The question is when will it inevitably move to consumers.

I don’t think it will, because MS won’t come up with an attractive product, the market will reject it, and Dell/HP/Lenovo/etc will force them to back off.

But we’ll see; like I said, if they do somehow manage to make a product with that business model attractive, we won’t be upset about it.

The contrary, licensing will be on the user now instead of the vendor.

I imagine it would be like an unactivated install where you just sign in and your settings and one drive are linked. Like chromeos maybe?

You mean like it is with windows already?

No clue about consumer devices/licensing/activation.
My surface was activated but that was 8.1

Yeah nice. So the infrastructure is already there and just like the kms for enterprise you will need to connect to the internet once every 30 days to reactivate. Link to Xbox live gold for payment and your all set.

Dell/HP/Lenovo will force them to back off because their users will reject the product, much as they did with Windows S.

I think it would work.

Yeah except what you’re saying is also just an opinion piece. the account to license linking is actually really useful when you go to move hardware.

How often do you move hardware? I just call MS and they allow me to move my OEM key over. I’ve used the same windows 8 OEM key I bought for like $20 for many years now.

Yeah its handy. Not unlike the android play store.

Not sure what your on about the opinion thing.

Requiring an always on connection to talk back to MS every 30 days or you lose activation, etc. would be opinion / speculation like the article. I was trying (probably poorly) to get across that its easy to speculate but not always helpful if its not made clear. That’s why I think articles like this can be pretty bad.

On the article: It is a possibility. It works for games, it works for office, it works for Adobe. I can totally see M$ doing this. I don’t think anyone wants that but that doesn’t really matter. So, we’ll see.

I am a lot more pissed off by that website giving you one button to accept all the tracking and advertisement BS but making you click over a dozen times to disable all that.

And just to give you an idea of what is going on there…

What? They were forcing Windows 10 when Windows 10 launched, and Windows 7 isn’t at EOL until Jan 2020 (people better start packing, I moved over to Linux but Win7 is very dated). Won’t matter much soon enough but there were Windows 7 machine before automatically updating to Windows 10 and it’s hard to change back.
