Memory help

Hello I am trying to upgrade my ram from 4gb to 8gb or even 16gb. The mobo I have is from a dell optiplex 790, its model number is 0j3c2f. From the research that i have done it supports up to 16gb and 4gb per dimm(I think my research is correct). I believe its max speeds are 1333. I also believe that the mobo is dual channel, it has 4 dimm slots and 2 different colors(B&W).

The pc is for normal use and gaming. I assume you will say 8gb is enough, but I do have a few game like the division which require 8gb minimum. Would there be any benefit to getting 16gb? I was wondering what speeds I should get and also how much ram I should get. I was going to get either gskill 1333 or 2400(price difference isnt much). Also should I worry about voltage?

Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks!

p.s. the full model number/part number of mobo is…CN-0J3C2F-72200- 26I-038D-A02(I believe there are zeros and not o’s)

Generally 8Gb should be fine. Try with 8gb first and use task manager to keep track of ram usage. if you’re using more than 75% of your ram (6gb in your case) then definitely consider 16gb

Yes that will take up to 16GB of PC3-10666 1333MHz. I know if you stick PC3-12800 1600MHz into it it will drop down to 1333MHz from experience. No idea of the compatibility of the 2400MHz though.

The 1333 will probably run better timings compared to the 2400. If you can’t reach the max clockspeed the supposedly faster RAM might end up slowing you down. So I would go with the official spec speed and max out capacity.

will 1.5v be alright?

im pretty sure it was an optiplex 790…but i got the model number off the mobo

1.5 for ddr3 is fine

1600 is cheaper than 1333…i think mobo max is 1333

should i just get 1333?

1333 have better cas latency…ill get 1333 unless told other wise

No reason not to. If mobo supports only 1333 max, then better to stick with it. Generally for intel platforms, memory speed doesnt really affect performance unless youre doing very specific memory intensive tasks.

ok thanks i will get the 1333. close thread
