I installed Manjaro Gnome on my desktop because I wanted to try something different, and KDE wasn’t cutting it. So far, I’m liking it a lot, but dear lord, there’s a ton of bloat. I count 15 games, and endless other bloat that I have absolutely no need for (cheese webcam booth? really?). Is this a Gnome thing or a Manjaro community edition thing? I swear there’s not this much bloat on my Manjaro KDE system.
I didn’t see bloat like that with manjaro cinnamon
Well Cinnamon isn’t gnome, is it? ![]()
I was just looking at what I have installed with Arch and realized I have all the stuff you’re talking about… I’m not sure exactly what installed it all of it because I just installed gnome-shell I’m pretty sure but it looks like most of it comes from the gnome-extra group (in my case).
So here is the deal with gnome
Gnome has a recommended way they want distros to use the DE.
Its up to the distro to either use their recommendation or to pick and choose what they want.
A lot of distros just go with the default.
The same is more or less true of all DEs.
So can I just remove the gnome-extra group that @lessaj mentioned without any trouble? I tried uninstalling the games earlier but somehow ended up removing a dependancy for the settings menu and I couldn’t launch anything, so I just reinstalled.
I pretty much said that. Last sentence, “I swear there’s not this much bloat on my Manjaro KDE system.”
I don’t see anything in that package group that would break that, but I’m not familiar with Manjaro.
Only thing I see that I’ll need in there is the gnome tweak tool. I’ll try it and see what happens.
You should be able to install that one by itself.
Package groups just make it easier to get something up and running by bundling it all together.
I figure out that my problem last time was removing Cheese. It’s a frickin dependancy for gnome-control-center. So I’m stuck with that, and I left a few other packages go, but I now have significantly less crap on my system. Thanks for the help!
The Fedora Implementation of Gnome is very clean and light. Manjaro is probably adding some software in…
It was just the gnome-extras package group that was offending me. I just removed all the games and other crap I didn’t need and kept the stuff like the archive manager and gnome tweak tool
Fellow Manjaro GNOME user here.
The Bloat doesn’t come from the maintainers of Manjaro, but the developers of GNOME themselves. for the most part, all of those apps are stock GNOME applications that were to come (let’s say you built Arch for example) if you install GNOME and all of it’s apps. it would range around 60 freakin’ apps. which is what you see when you install Manjaro.
it’s a pain in the ass, but do what I did remove them with this command.
It should remove damn near all of it. however be wary, it will delete some dependencies for some of your apps.
