Macbook Pro - PopOS - Fan Control Issues

I recently installed PopOS on my Macbook pro. Mid 2009.

Ive done all the normal upgrades, SSD, RAM, New Paste, etc.

Does anyone have a up to date guide on how to set a proper fan curve on this setup?

I have tried some older posts for installing Mbpfan and the Macfantld options that I found perusing google and anecdotally it seems like the fan is actually spinning up now, but not at any decent interval with minimal thermal impact.

Any ideas?

on Macs the fan is controlled by the system SMC, so maybe looking for tools related to the SMC might be an avenue to pursue.

So I went through the motion and added to the kernel and boot loader for good measure, no noticeable change. Any ideas?
