[LPT] Check you R710 Specs

If one is getting a Dell R710 with plans to upgrade the CPU or RAM, please pay attention to two things:

  1. Make sure CSIOR is Enabled, go to the iDRAC to do this.
1.1 This is because the Check System Inventory On Restart setting checks if there was any hardware changes since last boot and will load appropriate firmware. If not it will load the old config which may or may not cause your system to POST. This is disabled by default.

  2. Make sure that you have a Gen 2 system board.
2.1 these are the only ones that support the 130W CPU’s; if you don’t you will get a CPU power rating is not supported flashing error and system halt.

Funny thing is that Dell says that the 130W CPU’s are compatible for 710 in their manual; which I read before trying an upgrade. However there was no * warning the user that it has to have a Generation II board for it to work. Fuck you Dell.

So kids, don’t be like me.

Side note I will be selling my X5680’s.

BTW: the highest clocked Hexa-core Xeon that will work on Gen 1 boards is the X5675.
