Looking glass client window stuttering/skipping

Okay, now to the problem. This is going to sound completely crazy but while gaming Looking glass is suddenly a slideshow, it’s skipping chunks of frames such that fans seem to move in discrete chunks. If I switch the game in windows to use windowed mode and have at least a sliver of my desktop showing, everything is normal. Then I can watch fans spin and pan my camera around perfectly. The difference is night and day over just column of my windows desktop that is only two or three pixels wide.

This does not happen on the monitor plugged into the RTX 3060ti, the effect is exclusive to the looking glass client window on linux. I even checked with the obs plugin and the recording was filled with shaky, skipping, stuttering mess despite my eyes seeing perfectly smooth gameplay on the native monitor.

I’ve combed through the github issues, tried old versions of looking glass and made changes to my xml for hints.

The bug does not affect audio or videos. What else do I need to gather to track down this bug? Are there different ways for the client window to be rendered? that since the skipping/stuttering is not reflected on the fps/ups nor any of the other performance metrics I’m at a loss.

You are malformatting the command line options,

Any parameter/argument that is a true/false value is toggled when a value is not provided. -s does not accept any argument, it just toggles the spice from it’s defauilt. egl:debug by itself has toggled it on, yes is invalid and parsed as a seperate option because you left out the = which would have made this explicitly on.

ie:

I also did not ask for you to set or specify any flags, including the egl:debug flag which has just polluted the log provided making it hard to follow. In future only turn on debug flags when providing logs if the developers tell you to.

Why is LG not running as a service? WIthout this exclusive full screen applications like your game get GPU priority and LG is left with no resources for copy unless your game it’s running in windowed mode (as you experienced). If you can’t run LG as a service for whatever reason, cap your game’s FPS to something reasonable either via a FPS cap setting, or turn on vsync so some resources are left over for LG.

Apologies. Despite mostly succeeding with vfio I am otherwise a technological luddite. Anyways I have taken your feedback to heart and will adhere to that for future looking glass difficulties.

Looking glass was installed as a service but the service wasn’t running. I’m sure I had stopped it at some point of debugging and I guess the desktop shortcut didn’t restart the service. I restarted the guest just to be safe and it’s listed as a running service on this fresh boot.

Unfortunately still getting the choppyness when I center the windowed game to cover the entire desktop but your explanation sounds very compelling. I can’t comprehend what else is changing when I move to “fullscreen” or “offset a few pixels” I’ve got about 20% of my cpu/ram available when the game is running and half my gpu and it is running as a service. This choppyness doesn’t seem to be reflected in the FPS or UPS when I inch the game window left or right to incur the issue

As for spice, I was just trying without it. It didn’t help or hurt

No worries, just FYI spice is simply used to send keyboard & mouse input into the guest, it has zero impact on the way the guest runs or how the LG host application captures the screen.

Also the pulse audio cmdline hacks and the likes wont be needed with LG Beta 6 (or bleeding edge) as we now have native audio support via SPICE.

Maybe I am getting bad performance in both but I would totally settle for the the good regime, it is at least to my eyes, quite acceptable. I can look into sharing video if that would help

LG is working perfectly, if it were not we would not be seeing UPS here and the graphs look very good. The only suggestion I can offer is that your game/title is simply loading up your GPU too much.

What is the title? I can’t identify it from the screenshots.

Hold up, is the game/title actually only producing 24ish FPS to start with and the issue you have is micro-stutters, etc? If so I have been working under the wrong assumption.

If the source frame-rate is low by design (ie a video), minor stutters are expected due to clock and frame synchronisation issues between the two GPUs. Several things can make this worse such as a compositor, or using vsync in the LG client, or tearing due to a failure to turn on TearFree

I first encountered the choppy-ness on shadow of war, the game in the screenshot was star citizen. Cryengine certainly sucks in many ways but I’ve been happy with my middling 30fps for over a year with LG and since I’m a bit of a monster I’m half tempted to just play windowed this weekend with it nudged just enough to avoid the bug but we’ll see if it comes to that…

Can the LG client gain a stutter but only when the game covers the entire desktop? That’s still the A/B testing I can’t wrap my head around. If it was always bad when fps was low I’d totally understand. How does LG “know” part of my desktop is showing? Windows probably knows, maybe the game knows but how does LG “know” in order to behave accordingly.

40fps has never looked both so good and so bad to my eyes. I would naively expect equal amounts of stuttering regardless of window position, that seems a big clue.

I naively though the obs plugin was also capturing the LG overlay but I guess the screenshots captured the overlay info well enough. LG fps, ups, and game fps exist in some range of 30-60. I was getting a solid 40 for the screenshots and still the same A/B behavior.

Windowed and offset is what looks good through LG client, maybe that changes a vsync behavior. On the other hand it looks like I was missing xorg-x11-drv-amdgpu so xorg was falling back to modesetting so definitely no tearfree and I’ve got to check if I’ve changed compositor since I’ve last gamed. That is very possible.

Lots of food for thought, thank you for the help. Very generous to help a pleb like me. I will be sure to update this thread for in case anyone else happens to make some of the mistakes I’ve made and hopefully I reach a solution or at least an understanding of the problem’s nature.

tldr: Thanks for all the help. I can certainly explore compositors, tearfree and vsync combinations. These seem like convincing things to try but I think i’m ready to call it a night.

LG does not know, and can’t even tell if we wanted to. When you have a full screen game/application rendering on your PC windows disables desktop composition and does direct rendering, the render path changes. There is nothing we can do about this, nor should we need to.

The fact that your game can’t do the refresh of your monitor (60FPS) tells me your VM is overtaxed, you’re game settings are far too high to maintain a decent FPS or there is something else wrong. You must be able to run the game/title at your target framerate allowing enough room for LG to still do it’s work.

In short, the issue is your VM is under-performing.

Just for posterity I did try different combinations of vsync, compositors and tearfree. No dice.

So i guess that’s it… Something that has previously worked for years :frowning: will never again work? Crazy

Same game performance, same hardware, technically a new LG build (but I did try older stable releases). My performance has just regressed. It used to play perfectly, I probably have recording of it through obs. “impossible” but reality. My choice is to either reconstruct that older combination of Windows+linux or abandon LG. What a bummer, I hate to see it go.

I get that my use case may be niche, but this “under-performing VM” has worked! and now it’s unplayable? Under performing hardware sounds like a hardware deficiency not a: the software has changed the rules of the game and your use case is no longer valid or supported, pound sand.

What I’m hearing is this isn’t a bug but a feature that Windows->LG->Linux does not support playing games at less then 60fps even when you have 20+% of your VM free to support it. MY CPU is not maxed out, that is not a problem I have ever had. For a reason that is not CPU related windows suddenly, no longer allows LG to send frames of full screen games in a pleasant manner.

I find it mind numbing that it works when the game is windowed and not centered because only then does window treat the game optimally for performance, but of course that’s not optimal for viewing pleasure. I don’t hate windows that much, I might as well go back to bare metal.

But for the sake of perspective with this being your first posts on Level1Tech’s forum, I can provide you some insight. While I understand that you’re frustrated with the performance of your LG client and unsatisifed @gnif 's response, what you don’t realize is the person who took the time to offer you support is the actually developer of Looking Glass. He’s far too humble of a person to reply back with “I wrote the software, so I’m pretty sure I’m right”. But there really is no one on the planet more capable of providing technical assistance than him. Just saying :man_shrugging:

As gnif already suggested, it’s doubtful the issue is with the LG software itself. If your VM is underperforming look toward it being an issue with your hardware or host OS.

Oh I’m embarrassed if I came across like that - I absolutely do not hold anything against Gnif, and I would hope there’s no hard feelings, there aren’t on my side (despite how some of his curtness has comes across in text, who can blame him). I’m sure dealing with the “ignorant” like me who don’t have the fluency of dealing with this on a daily basis is exhausting and constantly tries at his patience. I’ve got a full-time job as a physicist and I too occasionally find myself in eye rolling moods where my responses become more curt and a bit impatient. No harm done to me, especially over text. It’s the worse form of communication. I’ve got thick skin, I can survive some scolding in exchange for precious debugging.

This is a “new” account but I’ve been using LG since the beginning, so of course I know who Gnif is, we have interacted before. I’ve had plenty of opportunities to try his patience and disappoint him with my lack of fluency with “his world” but maybe not here? I at least couldn’t locate an old account on any email account so I made one. He’s scolding people for talking performance on github which this at least superficially looked like to I definitely didn’t want to go to github and I recalled the triage threads of the past (which are also deprecated?) so I made a new account and posted here.

Since this is a volunteer project and I, a mere peasant, was able to steal time from the main dev’s day to explore this recent and unexpected regression in performance I can only be appreciative. It wasn’t owed to me, the project seems to perform for others and it’s free. As I repeatedly stated, I don’t think this is the fault of an LG update or change since I checked many previous releases. I greatly appreciate any help I get doing dumb stuff like virtualization of a gaming vm. It’s such a time sink passion hobby and there’s no way it would be possible without community development.

I even accept the possibility that if I had an amd threadripper/RTX3090 combo with 64GB of ram, looking glass would have even more headroom to play with and perhaps that would truly alleviate the issue. Gnif didn’t explicitly say 20% headroom isn’t enough for LG but that seems to be the implication. Why did it work before? I’m not sure Gnif’s theory explains the previous reality of it working but I admit some ignorance recent windows updates.

I desperately wish I could tell windows to “treat this game like it’s not centered on the screen” I really really want to access that amazing performance regime , a regime that used to dominate all three game window modes. The hardware is capable of it, so the pendant in me finds it hard to call that a “hardware deficiency” but perhaps that is too pedantic. The hardware requirements have simply been increased and have eclipsed my system? perhaps so. Gnif has always been right in the past, it is his project after all. Who am I to say. It was possible but that doesn’t commute to today. Apparently it’s impossible today. I just desire it regardless. I got really attached to it but that’s what I get for updating ( A joke, obviously I have to update to maintain a secure internet connected system)

Kind of a shame that in this process Gnif was able to fix up my VM in other ways and I may never use it again. I hate seeing that kind of effort wasted, but if I have to go back to bare metal then so be it. My naive hope was that we would simply uncover the mistake I made, a minor bug, or workaround to windows shenanigans. But I now understand that this is either “expected behavior” or “not feasible to fix/avoid”, probably the latter. It’s not like Gnif wanted my setup to break, it just did and if the fix isn’t out there I accept that conclusion.

A few things you might want to look into.

  • LG is using DXGI (or NvFBC - if you have a commercial NVidia GPU) to copy the frames. There are some titles that are known to have an issue with exclusive full-screen mode where they cause skipping. The only resolution for such games is to play in borderless windowed mode. It’s not LG’s issue, but rather the way the title is now interacting with Windows and DXGI.
  • Your VM needs some fine tuning. Though I don’t have your CPU, your pinning doesn’t seem right and you have no enlightenments.

Sorry what? I am turning people away from using github for asking for support. GitHub issues by definition are for reporting bugs or issues after one has been verified and identified, not for people to just turn up and say “X runs badly” only to find myself wasting time fixing someone’s bad system setup because they followed a guide without knowing what they were doing, or the implications of what they did.

If people use the proper support channels as directed such as here or discord and I or one of the other very helpful members can’t solve an issue and the cause appears to be a software bug, you will be told to raise an issue report on GitHub, not before.

As for just being short with people that don’t follow the clear directions, they were pre-warned when they tried to create the issue in the first place.

I never said that, I do believe that something has changed on your system with your setup to break things if it were working prior but it’s external to LG. The windows full screen optimization change information I linked was simply to explain why when you’re not full screen things appear to run better, not that it’s the cause of your issue.

You need to take a step back and try to isolate the issue if you have not already done so, for example, setup a fresh VM incase Windows has messed something up. Try different drivers in your guest. Verify your bios settings are all fine still (ie did a prior boot failure cause a dumb bios to undo/disable XMP profiles if you were using them).

Because you see 60FPS in the moving photo test, this tells me the fault is not with LG, but rather your guest VM is not performing as expected anymore because something has changed, it’s up to you to identify what.

I also do recommend you join the VFIO discord as @Netboy3 suggested as they are far better then I at remembering all the tweaks and things to poke at across the various hardware platforms.

It’s honestly no issue at all, I do enjoy helping people in general no matter what their level of technical abillity is provided they have put in the effort first, and are willing to be taught. :slight_smile:
