You could find an Asus G50V for 150 bucks. Pretty rugged and if he wants to play anything else it'll hold out for a few years. Runs windows fine but linux runs best on mine.
Edit: Also for note it can take 2 drives so it could last him for a really long time. I always put quality over whats what.
How well can it play minecraft?
And just how rugged is it? My nephew is known across the lands as someone who breaks anything he touches.
Probably going to want an old laptop with an i5 of some kind, this one has an 800p display

The case has plenty of air between the components and the shell. The one I have went to iraq and came back so i think it's a pretty good machine. SG is probably right though since the G50V is a core 2 duo.
Edit: MC isn't terribly hard to run. I play it pretty often on mine when I am out.
See if there are any used computer shops near you. You should be able to find an old Thinkpad, Latitude, or Elitebook with 2009-2011 specs that are built extremely well. Ebay or Craigslist are options too. The one that @Streetguru linked would be a good option. Pair that with an SSD and it should be fast enough. Graphics are lacking but playing it on low with at 720p should be possible.
@step1041
This one lists it having a dedicated card, although it doesn't say which near $200

Both seem to be good options. Depends on what CPU they run. The HP has a 2540p model number which makes me think it has a Core i5 2540m in it while the Thinkpad has a 520m.
Too bad these aren't available in Canada for that price or else I'd pick one up right now. Unfortunately I'd probably end up paying twice that in Canadian dollars.
Don't suppose you have a free geek nearby
Not here. I think there might be one in Toronto which is probably an hour and a half away. I'm using a mid 2009 13" MacBook Pro running Linux so I'm not in desperate need for something new, but if the right deal came up on the right computer I may be interested. I would like to get a laptop with a high res screen but those are hard to come by with the business grade laptops. They all still have those awful 1366x768 displays. oh and a backlight keyboard too.
I do have an Ideapad Y500 laying around but the screen is dying and I don't like the bulk.
Yes, I'm a picky person :P
I have looked for used computer shops, im not joking when I say none exist within about an hour drive from me. The 1 I did find has super old hardware.
I live where computer stuff is nearly non-existent. It sucks.
