Don't be naive. The concept of the Burkean Trust went out of fashion generations ago. Politicians don't make decisions based on the best solution for posterity. Politicians make decisions based on how they can best increase their personal political power and influence. If they can possibly enrich themselves in the process, with "campaign contributions" that doesn't hurt their feelings either.
