A Valve engineer spend a lot of effort, into bettering GPU memory allocation for foreground graphical desktop applications in KDE. This ensures foreground graphical desktop applications (e.g. games), do not get their graphics card memory (VRAM) evicted to system memory (GTT/RAM) unless absolutely necessary.
A priority system for GPU memory (VRAM), one that talks with the current state of the running graphical applications in the desktop environment, and ensures the graphical application that is in focus (foreground) gets the highest priority.
I hope this gets upstreamed and shipped by default in future kernel, systemd and KDE (and GNOME, eventually, van Vugt will get to it Iām sure!) releases.
Having no setup/configuration needed, it working by default and all distros benefiting would be stellar!
2026 is the year of the Linux desktop!
