Not if you wanted the fridge to sink the items you’ve used to a grocery list on your phone or something like that. My family has really bad habits about finishing something then not saying anything when someone goes to get groceries, so I see how it could be useful. Also in future you could tie something like that in so that you automatically order whatever runs out from amazon. They offer grocery services already for people within a certain distance of their warehouse, so its not that huge of a jump tbh.
I “get” all this, but
I don’t get it
If you see the video where they make the keynote you’ll see that they’re using their “beloved” tvos to base the software on all these smart appliances on. The same OS that was on those TV’s DDOSing everything. Great move, LG.
I have seen some beautiful tvs by LG that I wanted but nope I am not going to support this company if they are going to be like this.
Take yours out of its box first, then worry about new TV’s in a few years.
LOL! I know. I just keep putting it off and putting it off. 16K tvs will be out by the time I get my 4K out of the box. LOL!
So…a Faraday cage is going to be a must in the kitchen of tomorrow if you want to eat sandwiches without your fridge spying on you.
Soon we will need Navi’s just like in Megaman Battlenetwork.
I’ll happily wait for all those desoldering tutorials..
What bothers me the most, is that neither of those appliances will allow to deactivate Wi-Fi. So it is a problem two-fold, the internet connection that will be targeted and the ordinary user will be powerless to do anything about it (without some serious hacking).
Won’t be long before everybody is wrapping tin foil around their appliances… Is your thermostat behaving erratically? WRAP TIN FOIL AROUND IT!
I don’t even what the crap in my car ? Let alone my house run by it. There is a lot to said about parsing things down to the as simple as possible for consist reliable service. IOT is not it. Everything becomes cheap plastic juke that flakes out constantly.
Dont forget to wear Anti-surveillance clothes.
If it was up to me I would just block their internet access on my pfSense box. A whole subnet of LG appliances.

I love fancy gadgets as much as the next guy, but the last thing i need is my fridge bothering me with a windows update or something. Same goes for TVs too. I have at least six different devices in my house that can all handle streaming video from plenty of services. I don’t want a smart TV. i just want a TV.
I’ll be waiting for the day when you can’t watch TV because you have to install and configure a bunch of updates. lol
I don’t think it will be too far off. There are already stories of people having to connect to wifi so that samsung can serve them adds via the updates.
