Level1Techs Q&A Time Strikes Again!

What is your general opinion on the fight for privacy online, (i.e is it worth fighting or is the fight lost already) and what lengths do you guys go in order to protect your privacy online? (I.e custom roms on phones, limit access to non free operating systems and software)
Been a huge advocate for protecting online privacy and personal information for years. I often feel like nobody cares accept for the special communities around it. Would love to hear all your thoughts on the subject. Hope this isnt a repeat. Thanks for everything you all do!

Wendell, what is a product or technology that you recently tried that seemed to hold a lot of promise, but instead became a huge productivity pit of frustration?

When you can’t handle the request of a customer, do you give them a referral or do you outsource the job yourself and charge the customer appropriately?

How do you see the use of these narrow scope AIs effecting the IT industry and potentially even development?

How do I get into aquaponics without breaking the bank? (It would be nice if it could be more vertical and compact but one step at a time for me haha)

Second question for @kreestuh

What plants would you recommend for indoor air quality improvement?

Third Question for @kreestuh

If aquaponics are kind of expensive. Whats the best way to get into hydroponics?

Is Wendell still using the LG OLED TV? He mentioned years ago in a video I now can’t find that while there is some burn-in, it’s manageable. What is the burn-in situation today?

@wendell.
will there every be a 128bit/256bit or even a 1024bit cpu.

some say that the hell of floating point can go away if you have 128 bit integers.

I feel like that will eventually evolve into saying the hell goes away with more and more bits haha

I spent about 2 years recently installing networks in high-end homes and small commercial properties. We get some requests for crazy cabling such as CAT 7 and 8. I don’t see any advantage compared to fiber in conduit for longer runs and DAC cables (fiber and copper) in the rack. What are your thoughts on the never-ending ethernet upgrades vs other solutions? What use cases would benefit from cat 8 cabling?

Second question:

How do you see the future of the internet in the Midwest playing out? I see many areas that have one provider that charges a crazy high price with data caps because they are the only game in town. Now we have Starlink, Tmobile 5g ISP (and other 5g ISP providers), some electric companies are starting to pull fiber to the home, and Amazon is trying to launch Kuiper.

I mean CAT6 is specified for 250MHz with UTP shielding and that makes is suitable for bandwidth up to 1Gbps, while CAT7 is specified for 600MHz SF/FTP or U/FTP shielding which makes it suitable up to 10Gbps bandwidth and CAT8 is specified for 2000MHz with S/FTP shielding up to 40Gbps of bandwidth. While you can use cables with a higher specification for lower bandwidth connection, using cables with a lower specification for higher bandwidth connection might work, but will probably not, especially not if interference signals are present. When you run cables in a new location it is cheaper to use proper cables from the start then to open up the walls again later.

P.S. 40Gbps ethernet is rare, tough. But going with CAT7 can make sense if you plan to use 2.5, 5 or 10Gbps devices. CAT6 is cheaper, but CAT7 is not that much more and a tiny amount if you are preparing an office or house.

oh, oh another question for all 3…

Which kind of Godzilla movie is better- new CGI style, or old, stop-motion guy in a rubber suit style?

(Or, no interest in Godzilla, heavens forbid…)

They were never stop motion. But i get what you mean. They were a guy in a suit. A rubber suit.

Sorry for my mistake. Perhaps I’m thinking of Dinosoar films. I apologise for the deep offence I must have caused. And betraying our preceding brethren.

King Kong was stop motion if I recall.

Shameless plug for the HP 35s, which I just found out was discontinued in 2021. Fits easily in a breast pocket, great button placement, RPN mode (one of the rare ones with RPN still), and a little cover to keep from scratching your screen or mashing buttons in transit.

I think I paid $40-60 for mine, and now they’re going for $350 on eBay. If I didn’t love it so much I would take the profit and buy something else. But I love it too much.

i second this question :cookie:

Question for the team:

If the world gradually moves away from owning private self owned hardware & accessing their computing needs through centrally hosted (& scrutinized) VM’s on the :cloud:, will this prevent or limit innovation of both physical hardware & software/apps to a hand of a select few or instead maybe increase innovation quite a lot? Is there a place for a big IT/ICT industry & open source community as exists now?

Maybe this is a little too broad or silly of a question hmm
