All signs point to an attack exploiting PayPal’s Google Pay integration.
Most of the victims appear to be German users.
Germany has a special kind of debit card that isn’t supported with Google Pay, so you have to link your bank account to PayPal and then use Google Pay with PayPal.
Also, most people in Europe use debit cards, because the credit rating system is different, and your credit score doesn’t increase if you have credit cards.
