Thank you so much for this. Out of principle I am not watching or reading another review. This was perfect. Educational and entertaining. Tipped me over to engage through this Forum.
I thought I am having as I jump through many reviews today is that basing a premium gaming CPU review around 1080P in 2024 is approaching the point of dishonesty. I don’t see the purpose of this part. Anyone who needs productivity is going with a higher core count. Anyone who is after high end gaming is going to spend half as much money on any CPU made in the last several years and put that money towards a better GPU because they are gaming at 1440/4K and likely at >60 fps as well. Only if you have a 4090 and still have money to burn does it make sense to go up to the 9800X3D, but at that point you’re probably just going to get the 9950X3D.
I am paying attention to some of the sim performance of the 9800X3D. There are some benchmarks out for Stellaris and Cities Skylines. I haven’t seen any Factorio benchmarks yet where the load is heavy enough to bring it down to around 60UPS. With previous generation parts the X3D bump in Factorio completely disappears when you need it the most.
Hmm, perhaps Wendell will do some Factorio testing under linux with this CPU ?
I noticed these SIM numbers and within Flight Sim too.

So the 9800X3D is faster than the 9700X, not just due to the extra cache, but also with the same RAM speeds, because the hole from the cores to the memory controller is bigger? Do they not use the same on-chip DDR5 memory controller?
Excellent that the 9800 is as good as it is, which are promising for the other 3D models.
But not so good if the zen5 cores zen-5% are nutered due to some bottleneck between the cores and memory. Then it is not only windows or fixable with microcode, but a new hardware version with the changed linkage that is needed. Too bad, as the zen5 are nice, if they performed a 7-9% better.
The 9950x3d will be interesting to see…if and when he comes out.
Is it possible to switch off the 3D cache in the BIOS?
If yes, are there benchmarks for this case?
@Dank_Vader it would be interesting IF AMD decides to provide the Vcache for BOTH CCD’s
