L1kvm Overheating

KVM Model:

1.4 Display Port KVM Switch - Dual Monitor - Four Computer

USB Interface (5-gigabit or 10-gigbit):

10-gigbit

Problem:

KVM gets really hot, like almost burns my hand hot. I’ve noticed that the signal on the DisplayPorts will have some interference the hotter it gets.

Other Notes:

IO:

  • 6x (4 Input (PC, Work Laptop), 2 Output) Club 3D DP 2.1 Cables
  • 2x Input (Mac Mini) Moshi USB-C to DP Cables
  • 3x Output NIMASO USB C to USB C 3.1 Gen 2 Cables
  • Keyboard (Kono 87)
  • Mouse (Razer Naga V2 Pro)
  • Webcam (c922 Pro)
  • Mackie Mainstream Audio Interface

Setup:

I’ve had this for a few months now, and I noticed it would get pretty warm with just the PC / Work laptop DP inputs, but with the mac mini I just got yesterday this thing is very warm. I wouldn’t put it boiling temps, but definitely do not want to set my hand on it for more than a minute. Not sure if this is normal, from digging around I feel like it shouldn’t be getting this hot. I don’t have a thermal cam so I can’t get exact temps.

Do you know how hot it gets? I see you answered that, there should be some level of heat for sure. They get warm. Definitely not burning your skin, though…

Do you want an RMA?

Do you know what the normal temp range is? I’m just worried that I’m overreacting now and that it’s running within spec. It’s definitely the warmest thing on my desk.

I’m going to buy an infrared thermometer on amazon and get back to you tomorrow with exact temps!

Sure, and, hm… I’m really not sure exactly how hot a KVM should get. I know operating and storage temperatures lol but not this. Definitely let me know what you find.
