(KVM) VM stutters

Hi,

I run a Windows VM (Qemu/kvm) on Fedora 36.
if i allocate more than 1 Dimm worth of memory to the VM it stutters all the time.

Mainboard: MSI X570 A-pro
Memory: 4x 8Gb Crucial Ballistix Sport LT BLS16G4D30AESB
CPU: AMD R7 5700g

Any thoughts on how to fix This?

Are all drivers/firmware/bios etc. up to date? If so, are the DIMMS on different channels?

It’s dual channel with two dimms per channel. Bios is from December last year. So its reasonably up to date. The board has 4 dimm slots and all are populated. In the VM I use the latest stable virtio drivers from fedora ( ver. 0.1.221).

Hmmm… thinking this could be a few different things based on what you have said. I would look in the system log files (journalctl or use GNOME logs) to see if it’s giving any errors that could allow you to narrow down the root cause.

I’m thinking this could be a software configuration issue or maybe compatibility/feature issue with either the hardware or software.
