KVM Keyboard Hotkeys/Display Issues

Hey,

I just got a Level1Techs KVM from another user but have been having some issues with the keyboard hotkeys. I have a GMMK Pro with QMK installed on it and the hotkeys (ctrl ctrl 1/2) works fine when I just plug it in, but after it’s been plugged in for a while the hotkeys for some reason stop working. Keyboard works fine on Windows/MacOS, its just the hotkeys that stop working. I have to restart the KVM (unplug/plug back in) to get the hotkeys to work again, simply unplugging and replugging the keyboard does not fix it.

As a side note, when using the KVM with my macbook it generally works fine (thunderbolt dock → usb-c → displayport), but sometimes it will be working fine and then my monitor will display “noise” (white/black pattern you get on analog TV’s with no signal) and then go to black with no signal. Restarting the KVM seemed to fix this as well.

I’m using 3ft DP cables (Displayport 1.4 Male/Male Cable 3' Black 28AWGSupports 8K@60Hz Dymanic HDR) and a 6’ usb-c to DP (https://www.bestbuy.com/site/insignia-6-usb-c-to-displayport-cable-white/6419149.p?skuId=6419149) so I’m hoping it’s not the cable.

make sure nkey rollover is disabled

This is a symptom of transient EM. Restarting the kvm fixes it because it forces a handshake. It’ll do the same if you “reboot” the USBc cable by unplugging from both ends and replugging. If you use a moshi usbc cable it’ll probably clear it up or possibly club3d dp cables which are higher end than best buy

Gotcha, thanks! Will grab a new cable for that. Does the normal 12ft guidance apply with a thunderbolt hub? (should the cable going from macbook → thunderbolt hub be included in that length).

Also, why would nkey rollover make the keyboard hotkeys stop working after a while? Wouldn’t that be either a working/not-working situation, instead of a works for the first hour then stops working?
