JBOD/Disk Shelf Thing

So I run my home network and server our of a network rack in the top of my office closet. This has depth constraints and basically anything that has drive storage is too deep. This led me to speak with a manufacture in Taiwan about purchasing the front half of one of these servers, just bays and backplane. You can see where the front and rear of the case is riveted together. I thought about using a decommissioned server and cutting the front end off but they all seem to use propitary connectors and these backplanes use SATA power.

  1. Do you think it is a crazy idea to do this and just run SAS cables from my case to this. My cousin is interested too because his “magic hard drvie” is very large and a full server consumes a lot of power.
  2. I can get it in SAS and SAS HD with a $20 difference for the 12g backplane. I am leaning towards just SAS as the controlers are cheaper.
  3. Are there enough crazys like my cousin and I that are interested in this sort of thing? I am was thinking about importing a bunch.

Have a look on Aliexpress, I’ve seen assemblies like that offered by various shops. Not really cheap, probably SATA as well. As connectors go, pretty chance these are actually fairly standardised in the SFF 8000 series. Few examples:

Remember, these are just examples, Aliexpress is full of those types of cable.

This is what you’re looking for:

Hunt around, there are more options in price and storage capacity.

HTH!

I know you can get the SAS to SATA breakouts and I have thought about that as hotswap isn’t really a requirement of mine. I have looked at several models of 3.5" drive holders. Then I have to get those, a shelf, run the SATA data and power to each one. It looks like a rats nest. If I pull one, I have to disconnect each of those connectors on the back of whatever it is sitting on. I could use a 5.25-3.5" hotswap conversion but that is even more expensive.

The bottom one is in line with total price shipped from the vendor I spoke with (although I do like the MOLEX power on those better than SATA power). I think I originally found this manufacturer on AliExpress.
