Its finally time to replace my AMD daily driver

I want to upgrade my daily driver AMD 1800x from 2018 - so at this point I will probably go with Ryzen 9 7900 with AM5 socket and DDR5.

Why I am looking at Ryzen 9 7900?

12/24 cores
Low power
65W TDP
5nm FinFet
PCIe 5.0
includes low power cooling

so this will require the new chip, new mobo, new RAM

Why I am not sure about Ryzen 7900 - I am not sure about integrated graphics - will I want to also have my GeFore 1080ti ? If I use that 1080ti do I need integrated graphics? I am currewntly looking at this, if you have ideas please post someting.

The planned CASE: Fractal Define R2 in all white - I am not an RGB guy but I like white so I can at least see inside the case. Plenty of room for several 5.25 drives which I will swap in/out for a while.

The next generation is really close (somewhere anounced… I think).
Maybe give it some time?

Yeah I saw that - I really should wait but for this build I am not going for the best - I will have another machine for my HEDT and have another for my server.

I am feeling this machine is a time bomb because sometimes it locks up totally I have to turn off the EVGA 650 power supply on the back to reboot!

I used to have memory problems also. This an ASRock Fatality from 2017 with an original 1800X chip.

If you know why these things are happening let me know!

Hard to tell without knowing the full picture (I personally never had trust with asrock). But if you’re willing to make an upgrade, I dont really see much need to bother for the moment).

I understand that. But here the thought is to see where the prices for the current best will go(unless thats not a factor for you), and maybe the new generation will have something thats cheaper than the current, while giving benefits(but theres still the fresh new unpolished problems bucket).

1080ti is still good without ray tracing. You can disable the integrated graphics card. I don’t trust AMD driver and NVidia driver can co-exist peacefully on the same machine.

Ah if power to perf is your thing we are sooo close to zen 5 tho …

They can co-exist with no issues on Windows 10+, had been running a combined system for years and had no issues stemming from that.

Ryzen 7900 + ProArt X670E-CREATOR WIFI runs great and rock stable. If I were to complain about anything is that Marvell NICs are a bit crap but other than that it’s a solid board. Running it with Micron ECC memory but if you don’t need ECC and just want to work go for Crucials Pro series (5600) which usually are on sale too. https://www.crucial.com/memory/ddr5/cp2k24g56c46u5 (etc) or any other brand that follows JEDEC

Even if its old you probably want your old 1080Ti if you want some kind of “decent” 3D performance. If you want something newer without breaking the bank the Intel ARC 750 series are usually around 200$ or so with AV1 encoding too.

I have that in a Fractal XL (first gen) case myself =)

Do take note that you may need to get a new PSU depending on the motherboard power connections.

Why the 12 cores chip though? Sincerely curious.

It is 50% more cores than your 1800x, but if you have a separate HEDT to throw at any workloads really benefitting from more than 8 cores, won’t you be better off with a 7800x3d? Or even a 7700x for that matter (thinking about the full 8 vs. 6 cores per CCD).

That case is out of print, but if you already got one and / or know where to get one, knock yourself out of the park. Me, I would probably pick something smaller, ideally a 10 liter case or so since in 2024 you do not need 2.5", 3.5" or 5.25" drives to get by. Why you would ever need more than two 5.25" bays is beyond me, but we all got different needs.

The integrated graphics are fine. They can run a 4k screen at 60 Hz doing office stuff and watching Youtube (barely), but if you want to go for something that performs better than that, you are going to need to switch to something better.

Waiting for Zen 5 is an option, although the 7900 successor will take a while, right now 9900X seems to be a 120W TDP beast and the 9950X seems to be at 170W TDP. This could, perhaps, be undervolted / downclocked to 95% performance at 65W TDP which makes it similar to the 7900 though, so I agree there is some merit in waiting.

Here is a build suggestion of something that should last you close to five years. I have included a modern GPU option as well, that is around 60% better than the 1080 Ti.

Feel free to take or leave out whatever you’d like in this build. After all, it is your money. This is not the end build but rather a suggestion that anchors discussion towards what is a reasonable system. Compromises can certainly be made, and I will highlight a couple of options below.

PCPartPicker Part List

Type Item Price
CPU AMD Ryzen 9 7900 $368.99
Motherboard MSI MAG X670E TOMAHAWK WIFI $274.99
Memory G.Skill Ripjaws S5 2x32 GB DDR5-6000 CL30 $197.99
Storage TEAMGROUP MP34 4 TB M.2-2280 PCIe 3.0 $229.99
Video Card Sapphire PULSE Radeon RX 7800 XT $494.99
Case Montech AIR 1000 PREMIUM $69.98
Power Supply SeaSonic FOCUS Plus Gold 1000W Fully Modular $129.99
Total $1766.92

Alternatives / Skimps:

  • You can save ~$100 by going with 32 GB of RAM instead of 64 GB. This is a perfectly good option but you might need a RAM expansion in the near future (next 3 years), depending on use case.
  • Another $100-$125 can be saved by going B650 over X670E. You will lose some PCIe 5.0 connectivity and one or two m.2 slots, but other than that, no big deal.
  • You can save ~$80 by going for a Western Digital SN850X 2TB drive instead of the MP34 4TB. The MP34 is cheaper per TB but the SN850X is PCIe 4.0.
  • If Radeon is not your thing, the 4070 Super is ~$100 more for 30% better performance. I do not recommend a regular 4070 over the 7800 XT ($50 more for 6% more perf).
  • If you are lucky you might snipe a 6800 XT on the second hand market for ~$300-$350 bucks, this is an awesome price for that performance (50% better than the 1080 Ti).
  • You could save $50 on a 750W PSU, but we are in a very power hungry phase when it comes to desktop computers, which is why I recommend a 1000W PSU.
  • Case is just an example since I know you have your mind set on something already, feel free to swap with whatever you like. It’s more there to complete the build for anyone else looking for a similar project.

You didn’t say what you will do on your daily driver.

I mostly do office work, browsing, some youtube and videos. Occasional picture editing.
You have an additional HEDT for performance work.

Why don’t you go with a mini PC? Something like the SER8 from Beelink

Much cheaper than the above build, but probably similarly performant, yet consuming less power.

Once the 9-th generation is out, I think there will be lot of 7-th generation CPUs available on the used market from people looking to upgrade, I know I will be one of them.

tell me more - or point me to what you want me to see as I am a bit behind in these things :grinning:

Thinking about it yes I would think the 1080ti can exist with integrated graphics

I actually have these cards MSI 1080ti, XFX RX 6700 XT, ASRock RX 6900 XT

I have the earlier ProArt X570-CREATOR WIFI with a 5950 - this is my HEDT, I was mad at it when I couldn’t get Win Server 2019 to finish installing. It has the 6900 XT of course.

I do photography, video (editing and recording), some gaming, music, downloading of Youtube videos related to these areas. I think Youtube is about to go behind a paywall, they are already injecting ads to drive people mad.

I want a case I can get my hands in and also see what I am doing. This discontinued case is just the thing for me - I have at least 30 5.25 drives I want to consolidate on rainy Saturday mornings and have 4 or 5 drive trays for the case. I also use blu-ray drives and archive my cd collection to flac for use wherever.

I just want to survive this 1800x machine without something bad happening and have a successor that can go another 5 years while getting the benefit of the newer tech. It is running WIn 10 Pro still without the chip that Win 11 wants. But I won’t put Win 11 on it through a workaround anyway.

Ah, I see. Have you considered external 5.25" cabinets connected to a USB 3.0 / USB-C?

You do know external USB BluRay players can play any DVD and CD and if it is a burner you want those are pretty cheap, too? From my perspective there is pretty much no good reason to still have internal 5.25" optical units, especially considering there are now external USB 5.25" drive cages powered via USB, like this one:

In my opinion there are two modern use cases left for 5.25" bays, ICYDock containers and some kind of media front-side dashboards like this one:

Don’t take this the wrong way though; not saying you must upgrade or change what works for you, necessarily. It’s just that, well, if you see a friend driving around with an 80s car of a gas guzzler and you know they could get a $5k car from 2010 that is better in pretty much every respect, except it ain’t a square box on wheels because modern cars have moved past that… Would you not at least advise on that?

So my PoV here is to point out where tech has headed the last 10 years in order to allow you to make reasonable and informed decisions. If you still want a case with a ton of 5.25" bays, this case is still available and has 12 bays:

It is a VERY small iGPU [won’t sacrifice PCIe, as would with the G series SKUs beefier iGPU]
Main best usage, is for initial system testing / troubleshooting [can be shut off, via BIOS]

It is happening. I just got hp prodesk 600 g5 with i7 9700 around $100 on ebay. I believe coperations are replacing desktops that have run out of 5-year support.

I have been waiting on the Ryzen 7 8000 series miniPCs and this thing IS IT!!!

Very stoked about this offering from beelink

For a few months I was using 7950X without a discrete graphics card for (software dev) work, running Fedora with one 60Hz 3840 x 1600 monitor. I didn’t notice any issues, I wasn’t really looking for any either.

Conversely I did have a problem in another AM5 computer with not being able to get video out with an AMD 7900 XTX card, eventually a bios update provided a disable integrated graphics option that made things work for me, That was when AM5 had just came out.

You haven’t mentioneod what OS you use, if it’s Linux…Not having to ever mess with NVIDIA drivers has been quite a nice feature for me.
