It IS possible to 4K/120/HDR/VRR 444 chroma on Linux/Bazzite with AMD 9070XT with this DP to HDMI cable...but it may not work for everything

I have the C1 and a 7900XTX, I don’t see any problems with Freesync Premium.
But maybe I’m blind, can you describe the problem?

I never used vrr myself, but I heard of it when I investigated what the hell was my failure mode with that dp convertor.

Its weird brightness flicker:

Edit: Hmm, some reddit user submission actually match what I’ve seen on LGC2, just without black frames.

Does anyone know of good video upload site that does NOT require login for upload? Streamable I found deletes uploads after two days.

It depends on whether the GPU is supported or not with the monitor model.
I didn’t realize that VRR/Freesync is not a “it just works feature” until I switched from the 2080 to the 6800XT.
The LG 55C9 I had at the time didn’t support Freesync with the 6800XT, that’s why I bought the C1, which supports the 6800XT and 7900XTX.

Well I decided to rebuy the Cable Matters adapter and try again. I dont know why it just stopped working, but I am going to be a little more patient.

However, if it limits itself to 4K/60, does anyone know a command such that I can force 4K/120Hz 10-bit 444 w/ VRR?

I can confirm that it IS capable of working.

The new CableMatters DP-to-HDMI2.1 cable arrived yesterday. I booted into Windows and installed the working custom firmware, but I booted into Linux and at first it didn’t work and was still limited to 4k/60Hz.

I booted back into Windows and loaded the latest firmware and it lost VRR support, so I decided to go back to the custom working firmware and when I logged back into Gamescope, the 4K/120 option returned and my LG C1 OLED gave me a full 444RGB readout with Freesync working.

Am I out of the woods and now have a Bazzite that can take advantage of all the bells and whistles of HDMI 2.1? Time will tell and I hope that fixing it in the future doesn’t require me to reload the firmware.

If anyone has suggestions on how I can force Bazzite to do a 120 Hz refresh rate using command lines, I’d be grateful.

i hope more of you will try this, if this works it will push better compatibility and could largely make the HDMI Forum’s bullcrap irrelevant.

I know you made this post several days ago, but according to Linus from LTT, the proprietary code from Linux has already leaked…if only someone could hack that code into Linux…

The cable will stop working and defaults to 4K/60 with no option available to select 3840x2160x120 in Gamescope. This happens after the TV and computer are off for an extended period of time.

After much frustration I seem to have figured out how to make it work and I am hoping in time this will lead to a more reliable solution.

  1. I boot the PC into Gamescope with the HDMI cable connected, which means I get a 4K/120 HDR VRR 420 @ 8-bit output. Doesn’t look as bad as you would think.
  2. Go into desktop mode
  3. Disable the LG C1 output (this requires a secondary monitor)
  4. Unplug the HDMI cable.
  5. Plus the DP2HDMI connector in to the same HDMI port on the TV

Then it works
As to why? I have no idea why that worked but my only guess is that the TV somehow “remembers” a 4K/120 signal from original HDMI cable and tries to pull that same info from the DP cable and activates all the correct instructions.

If anyone can suggest a much less cumbersome solution…then Id love to hear it.

Detail please, this sound interesting. Where could one find such fine wares?

Also no officer, there is no warez kmod loaded into my kernel, honest !

Obligatory

It disappoints me that I haven’t gotten ANY sort of feedback help on this post. Perhaps this isn’t the right forum to be asking this. If so is there a more active community who I can present my findings to in hopes of finding a long term suggestion/solution? I figured these findings would excite a lot of people, but I guess I was wrong.

Maybe if we might preserve the functional edid while it’s working and added onto grub we might be able to preserve the cable’s profile with no issues

Maybe someone could but the redistribution would be illegal…

Are you using wayland or X11? My cable matters adapter won’t work at 4k120 in X11, only on wayland… I use the usb-c one with my zen4 iGPU.

I’ve long went back to windows 11 ltsc and traded my 9070XT for a 5070 Ti that I got at MSRP.

If the HDMI 2.1 issue gets solved, I’ll trade my 5070 Ti back for a 9070XT and run my Bazzite home theater PC.

At this point I am waiting for 1 of two things to happen.

  1. Nvidia gets their drivers working great on Bazzite/gamescope
  2. Linux HDMI 2.1 support makes it to AMD GPUs

No idea, which, if either, comes first.

Guys vrr it worked for me, but idk what to think about that might be a bit unstable, will make on some extensive research to see how can i make it emulate the closest to windows
